Burnt Orange Auto Paint

I have an old truck that I'm thinking about painting. The truck is not a daily driver and spends most of the time in my garage. I've been to a couple of paint and body shops, but I don't want to spend much money on this project. I figured somebody on here has tried this in their own garage. Any suggestions?

I've painted a couple of cars before. If you are gonna do, do it right or else you are better off prepping the car yourself and getting someone at Earl Sheib to paint it. Don't scoff. If this is for a daily driver, you can get a respectable paint job that way.
Unless you are going to get into this as a hobby, you might be better off getting someone else to do it. Realistically you need a pretty good size compressor. 80 gallons and a lot of CFM (most important). If your compressor has wheels forget it. More importantly decent paint these days contains isocyanates which are wicked toxic to the lungs. A charcoal mask is NOT good enough unless you have access to a high end downdraft paint booth. You need a fresh air system or else you are risking your health. These generally run about $350-500 for a hobby system. Quality paint is expensive. Most people figure $1000 for paint and body supplies, more if you don't have longboards, a quality gun etc.
Don't paint in your driveway. Sounds stupid but some people do. Your neighbors will hate you when their car has burnt orange overspray. I painted in my garages. Set it up as a paint booth with extra filtered ventilation etc.
I'd research it a lot more before deciding. You'll save yourself a lot of headaches. I like the message boards on Hottrodders.com and autobodystore.com. There are very experienced autobody guys on there that have been very helpful to me. There are threads specifically about garage paint jobs and Earl Scheib paint jobs. There are also thread about the cheaper lines of paint by Duplicolor etc. READ, READ, READ before getting into this.
I love autobody as a hobby but I still don't recommend it to others because I know that 8 out of 10 will go into it half assed and end up disappointed because their half *** paint job looks like ****.
Good luck.

if you've never done this before, and don't know what you're doing, please do us all a favor and paint it maroon

my brother sanded and primered his truck himself, then let a pro paint it. hard to **** up the sanding and priming, and he didn't have any body damage to repair or bondo so that made it even easier. he saved money and still got a good paint job.
