someone tell me about burning man. i've read the burningman website and the wiki page. i'm only mildly educated on it.

has anyone been? is it worth it? what's it like? what can i expect if i decide to go this year.

thanks.

I've looked into it a bit. Seems like it would be fun. Although, I'm not sure I could handle a week in the Nevada desert in August without modern conveniences.

10 years ago it was awesome. Now it is much more crowded but lots more to see and do. good and bad depending on who you ask. It is not as rough to give it a go now with amenities more available. I know people who have gone since the first couple years and don't go and some who did that but stopped only to return.

If you are curious you should head to the little "burn" in Texas called, Flipside. It is outside of Austin and considered to be one of if not the best mini burn prior to Burning Man. Same community.

So if you think you wanna do B Man, hit up Flipside and meet some people so that when you go out west you know people from the get go and have an idea of what is what.

To give you an idea--some guy hung himself in a tent last year at Burning Man and the first people to encounter his lifeless body thought the dude was doing an "art piece"

Yeah, ummkay...

thanks loop.

but what IS burning man. i know it's suppose to be a community. but what is it and what is it suppose to do? what did your friends take away from it? why did they go?

I used to be connected by marriage to a group of total freaks whose life seemed to be centered around Burning Man and Tiki parties. Between the witches, the geeks, and the potheads, it seemed like a good place for me to avoid.

A guy I know did a documentary on Burning Man that you should check out. He does a good job of explaining Burning Man. I don't remember the name of the documentary, but his production company is Gone Off Deep Productions. They're based out of Austin. Really nice guy. I used to be on his softball team. I haven't talked to him in a while, but last I knew his doc was winning awards at film festivals across the country.

It's a group of people who want to explore alternatives to conformity through art, hedonistic behavior and exotic lifestyles, at least for the duration of the festival.
Imagine the opposite of aggy, and you have the concept.

I like The Onion article from 1998, followed by l00p saying it was awesome 10 years ago. Any chances that l00p is "local teen".

Is this a group sex, swingers, orgy kind of party?

I'm in!
