Bulk trash disposal

OK, there has to be a better solution than

a. wait 5.5 months for my neighbhorhood's semi-annual bulk trash pickup

b. pay the City of Austin $55 + extras to pick up bulk items

c. pay a landfill fee

d. pay U-Call We-Haul to haul and pay a landfill fee

in order to dispose of a couple of large, broken household items. Are there any public dumpsters around town? (No, I'm not going to go use the dumpster at some business in the middle of the night.)

Maybe I should just go to a construction/demo site and pay the foreman $10 to use his dumpster . . .

It's actually just a couple of office chairs. I should have said "medium" sized I guess.

If I could find a list of the neighbhorhood bulk trash pickup, I wouldn't be opposed to a little midnight dropoff.

Does your place of business have a dumpster?

Or, if they're not completely shot, you can list them on Craigslist as free along with your address and set them on the curb for a couple of days along with a "Free" sign and see if any Craigslist readers or neighbors want them.

Disassemble them and stuff as much into your trash barrel as you can each week. You could also take the metal pieces to a recycler--there's one on Howard Lane.

Drop them off at Goodwill. If they're shot they'll chuck them for you. Ever notice that huge dumpster in the back?

As another poster suggested, put them out on your front curb. Only instead of putting a "free" sign on them, put a $20.00 “for sale” sign on them. They will be stolen before sun-up.

My bulk pickup is set for 9/8. I emailed and asked them last week because I have a few items I need to get rid of to. OakHill area of course.

I think our bulk trash pick up is going on this week. Lots of stuff near the curb. I live a little west of Mopac and north of Spicewood Springs Road, which I think is maybe a little north of where you live, if that helps.

I sense the need for a website that posts bulk pickup locations . . . thanks for the tips, everyone.

I did notice a giant dumpster at our building today where they were tossing roofing materials. Hmmm.

Public schools have one dumpster designated and kept unlocked for public use. They don't make word of it well known but yup, it's true. I called AISD after being told this by two people and then by a poster on this site. But, call yourself in case it has changed.

There are def. people who know the bulk item collection schedule. They make a living off of driving around and scavenging.

Some people take just about anything. I had a floor lamp, sort of like the Torch light that I think everybody had in college. I put it out front near the light pole. Nothing for a day, it was still there. The wind overnight blew it over and dented it as well as broke something along the stem of the lamp making it hard to stand straight. So I semi leaned it on the pole. Within a couple of hours it was gone. WTF?

My bulk trash pickup was last week - I put an old crappy couch and microwave out - they were literally gone within 30 minutes.

"The other is complaints of scavengers trawling the neighborhoods."

That's just ******* stupid.

The city would rather use my tax dollars to pay city employees to haul stuff off when others would gladly haul it off for free? And, either recycle (scrap metal, aluminum, etc) it, make use of it or sell it.

Anyway, I've had good luck just setting old furniture, appliances, etc out by the curb between pick up dates and it always disappears in a day or two.

we put a bunch of stuff on our curbin Phoenix earlier this year with a "free" sign. It was all gone in 18 hours.

The neighbors didn't care. Some of them took some of the crap.

You should try that.
