Building a website

I want to build a personal website, something I have zero experience with. I purchased the domain name I want from godaddy last week, so thats taken care of. Where to go from here? I suppose Ill need to find server space and some sort of software or application to build the site. Any recommendations or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

The simplest thing to do would be to use some blogging software like WordPress. There are also hosted blogging services that you could just point your domain at.

There are also what are know as Content Management Systems (CMS) that use templates and make it easy to edit websites that look more traditional. Joomla would be one example of a CMS, but I don't know what the best one out there is right now.

For more advanced websites, you could use something like ExpressionEngine.

what kind of site are you making? is it a blog? is it a site where you have pics of your family? is it a site trying to sell something?

wordpress, like was said, is pretty great, depending on what you're trying to do.

you can host with godaddy or other places (i'm not a fan of godaddy for anything). you can get hosting at 1and1.com for as low as $4 a month. there's free hosting out there, but i've never used any of them so don't know how good or bad they are.

I use 1and1, and they have always been great. You can also use MS Frontpage. It you have MS Word, you can create a word document, and save it as a web page.

If you have a Mac, use the free iWeb app that came with it. It works great for most people and as you would expect it's simple to use. If you get a MobileMe account Apple will host it using your personal domain name, too.
