So I have 3 months off - I have a 3 month non-compete and I'm switching jobs. Former job paying me NOT to work for 3 months.

So i'm in a situation where new job cannot contact me by contractual agreement and old job wont contact me.

Am I dreaming? Just turnd in my blackberry.

Anyway - 3 months - what should I do. Caveat, i have a newborn so cant just travel fro 3 months.

I'm flying to SD on Monday and then collecting Loopy and we are road tripping to Vegas, picking up 2 more friends, going to the grand canyon, then dallas, then austin.

Going to buy a ranch in Austin area.

Then flying to NYC to dispose of NYC apt - back to HK.

Then what? Goes without saying I'll work out every day. Can take a 2 week trip in August - where?

What else should I do? I'm married so I can't do two chicks at the same time anymore.

I would make a list of your favorite bands and give it some thought. Then do a search for festivals worldwide and see if any or a few of them are playing at the same festival or near one another. Make it a combo of those cities for music, food, museums and general mischief. A music tourist.

Can you handle a boat? I have a very special Bahamian experience in my life that required that I could handle a boat. A motor boat.

1. Come up with a more original title than "Bucket List."
2. Read a classic novel that you've always meant to read, but never have.
3. Figure out something that would normally scare the crap out of you (skydiving, pick up a tarantula, whatever) and do it.
4. Learn to drive stick-shift, if you haven't already.

Most of my "Bucket List" suggestions require more than three months of dedication, stuff like running a marathon (no walking) or learning a foreign language. If you live in Hong Kong, I'd guess you've already done one of those anyway.

It has been several years so the numbers will be different, but I rented a house on Green Turtle Cay in the Abacos. About 2k for a week and the nicest house there.. The only way to get there is by boat. We flew into Treasure Cay and rented a 29' open bow, center console boat for 900/week and then drove the boat the Green Turtle Cay (40 minutes?) where we were met by our rental agent who had a golf cart for us to use to buzz around the island. Each day we would motor to a different uninhabited island where we could find sea biscuits or starfish the size of frisbees or we would catch some groopah (grouper) or we would go to a different cay where you could get a cheeseburger and rum drink in paradise. Or, we would easily motor out to the third largest barrier reef in the world where they have numerous mooring bouys to just snap onto and dive in 20 feet of water and play with (you could guess this) green turtles and warm water lobstahs galore or unmenacing reef sharks or barracuda 3 feet long. The Abacos consist of greater Abaco which is a large island and it is skirted with cays like Green Turtle and then the cays are skirted by the barrier reef. Outside the reef, the water drops off to about a million miles deep and pelagics cruise the edge for easy pickings. I don't really care about deading a billfish, but you can release them easily.

The people could not be friendlier.

If any of that sounds like it should be on your list I will be happy to share more.

Yeah, if had the funds and time, an exotic island trip away from the madding crowd would be high on the list. One of those hard to get to spots, and I would take my own chef who could whip up locally found seafood and produce into great dishes. And I would make sure there were surfing spots there, and take surfing lessons.
Or I would take race car driving at a school like Skip Barber racing, I'm sure there are others.
Foodie? Trip to great restaurants in different cities?
Like Formula 1? Trip to one or two Gran Prix races, going first class all the way.

Madding? You never cease to increase my admiration.

This is the edit: I don't think surfing is much there. The barrier reef takes that out, BUT the conch fritters and conch burgers and goombay smashes and grilled lobster more than make up for the lack of surf.

You only need Lincoln Jones to help you spear some fish and then fry them on a desolate beach on Manjack Cay while 5' wide stingrays kiss your toes and sharks swirl for the parts you don't want after you have gone by Miss Emily's Blue Bee Bar and had her fill up an empty bottle of rum with her special Goombay smash

on your way from San Diego to Vegas you could have beers with BigWill in OC.

Probably not on your list, but just sayin'...

thanks guys.

ND - i may call you. If the little guy (born last month and named Vince for obious reasons) can travel sounds fabulous.

I should say i going to hike in patagonia with my sister in august and go to greence for a wedding right before the end.

I'm surfing tomorrow and have done that a lot - stick shift, owned several manual transmision cars.

Old timers on this site (3:16) will recall "3some tonight?" and many other debauched threads from my time in NYC so thats been done to death.

I'm going to do a lot of cantonese practice and may run to Bhutan to hike for a week.

Big Will - I will hit you one of these days - I'm in LA a lot for business and would love that drink.

I'm going to Amanpulo with some friends for a hard core getaway this winter.

I can tell you now, no blackberry is freaky - nobody bothering me etc. It's good. I'm finally beginning to relax for the first time i think in 15 years.

My dad is turning 70 on Tuesday - I'm going to spend a lot of time with them.

Loop and I will report from the road on our tour.

If you think of anything else to do keep the ideas coming.

float the Coloardo river-- I wanted to for my 40th, but got busy-- Austin to MAtagorda-- about 170 miles-- 4-5 days

If you are going to Greece, consider a side trip to Ephesus. The valley is one of the most amazing things I've ever experienced. My degree from UT was in philosophy and I concentrated in the Greeks so I might have a bit of a bias, but I don't think so much that you wouldn't also be blown away. Buy some saffron while you are there. There is a piece of the excavation that has a few relics from a minor emperor with a stone foot and a round stone underneath it that predates the Christian experience and has an inscription that says something along the lines of "I have conquered the World. It lays at my feet." It is round! The ancient sailor captains knew (for millenia before Columbus supposedly proved it) that the world was round, but they didn't want their crews to know it out of fear of mutiny. I think it's also where the posslePaul died also, but it's more of an archaeological deal. It's an entire city, complete with 3 story library that dates back several thousand years.

The turks are dicks, though.

I think the little guy could handle the Bahama deal with no problem. Wouldn't get anything out of it, but this is about YOUR 3 months and when will you get anything like this again? Besides, Bumbles bounce (from Rudolph the Rednosed Reindeer). For anyone else who might consider Abaco, Dodge's Cruising Guide is indispensible. Maps, depth charts, advice about channels, good fishing spots, etc.

since you're working out everyday anyway, why not run something difficult like a 1/2 marathon. You could schedule it toward the end of your 3 months, someplace you've wanted to visit anyway.

I was very surprised how thrilling it was to run my first 1/2 marathon in October, and I'm an overweight 46 year old.

A lot of people have done this, but if you're a golfer, you must play Pebble. Stay in Carmel for a week, and bring your wife - she will love it. You guys probably have already been. But it doesn't get any better than Pebble. It is worth every dollar of the $400-$500 per round.

Also, if you're buying a ranch near Austin, might I suggest a little southwest of Austin in the Hill Country? If you're a golf / Guadalupe enthusiast, I've got a great place for you to visit.

id love to play pebble travelling with the wife will be hard for more than a weekend. We bought a charity weekend in beijing.

Lets concentrate on 2 weeks in august, anywhere in the world, active is better. will go with my athletic sister

August is the height of hurricane season. Should be a really bad year this year. I wouldn't plan on a warm water vacation.

Buy a 911 to drive from Vegas to Dallas to Austin. They can be had pretty cheaply, and it is probably the only exotic that couls make the trip.

I've done many static jumps in the Army (as well as slide out of choppers) but never free fall. Its on the list for sure.
