BROWNWOOD vs CARTHAGE

Last week I got to see Malcom in San Antonio vs MacArthur. Friday night I am in Dallas to see Jaxon play against Carthage. I'll give a report on Saturday.

Okay, I didn't realize we had one from Carthage. I'll have to make sure I get a program so I can see what number he is. That is badass.

I went to the game last night. There was a great atmosphere. Both teams well represented.

Shipley - it took a while for Brownwood to get him going. Carthage had 2 high safeties all game long. Early in the game he got loose on a couple of quick reverses and a crossing route or 2. He didn't really take off until the last drive when he caught just about every pass to get them from around the 20 to the 5. He had very good speed but what stood out the most were his incredible hands and ability to play the ball in the air. He never got the ball with a lot of space in the open field. He was back to return kicks but Carthage never kicked deep on kick offs.

Thompson - Great size and closing speed. He did a good job getting back in to pass coverage. He never really blitzed or rushed the QB. He could have been a little better getting off blocks (in his defense, some of those he was getting wrapped up by the OL).

Edwards - played safety and some WR. He covered a lot of ground at S. He is very thin (legs especially). He tackled high (he's has to be 6'3). He might be a better WR prospect. He did a good job of going up and getting the ball on both sides. The only guy that out-worked him for the ball was Shipley.

Carthage RB Holland was amazing. He had 308 yrd rushing. Carthage OL and DL were HUGE. 72 looks like a great OT. Bad mistake by Brownwood kicking deep right before half. Carthage returned it inside the 25 and scored on a fade to #1 who looks like a great WR/S prospect.

The last drive for Brownwood was all Shipley. He converted a 3rd and 26 by out leaping 2 defenders. The offensive PI on Shipley in the end zone with 26 sec left was questionable IMO. Shipley was getting grabbed and held and he was just fighting them off. Moved the ball back to the 18 and after 2 shots in the end zone incomplete, Brownwood got a big QB scramble to the 5 with 2 sec left. Shipley was double covered at the goal line and there was no chance he was going to catch it. The slot guy looked uncovered to me.

Great game. Carthage is for real. It was great to see Kendal Thompson and Jaxson hugging after the game. They will have good time ahead.

Well it looks like my thunder was stolen. They pretty much summed up everything. I will add that Shipley was also Triple covered on a few plays. I can't get over how much he and Jordan looks a like on the field. He needs to get off the jams a little better from the DB. But he was automatic when the ball was thrown to him.

Thompson is a beast. The dude's name was called by the announcer after every tackle it seems. What I liked the most is he s the leader of that team and you knew who was in charge. He has a presence about him. I think he belongs in the middle. Although he had good speed for HS, i'm not sure he will be fast enough at the college level.

But the fastest guy on the field was Shipley and the best two players were these two. Shipley was very upset after the loss and Thompson gave him a big hug afterwards. That's what teammates do.
