British Open

According to news reports, the course is very benign today. There are tons of scores below par. Who would have ever picked Tom Watson as the 1st round leader???

It will be interesting to see the later rounds - if the harsh conditions start to prevail, it will make it very tough for the second page of the leaderboard to move up.

Appears that the wind is starting to howl and make this tournament look more like the British Open. Jiminez posted +3, and Tom is +4 through 8. Steve Marino looks pretty good, already in the clubhouse for Round 2 with a -5. Low numbers will be much harder to get today.

Not a hater at all, but it seems like any time there is any kind of inclement weather, Tiger seems to struggle. Could it be attributed to the near perfect weather he played in as a kid in Cali as well as his adult life in Florida?

Tiger is indeed a precision golfer and when he's on, and the conditions are not a factor, he is as precise as anybody. He hits every ball knowing exactly where he expects the ball to go. But you're right he is not a good bad weather player. Still, I believe he is the greatest golfer we have ever seen.

Marino, Watson, and Calcavecchia at the top of the leaderboard. Guess Tom Watson will be the sentimental favorite - but it's hard to imagine Tom bearing up to two more days like today.

I will be watching at 7:00 am tomorrow. If Watson can pull this off, I would be hard-pressed to think of another sports story/accomplishment that would top this. Would even make the 1980 USA Hockey Team gold pale in comparison.

Tom fell to the yips on his putt at 18 in regulation - it never looked like it had a chance to go in the cup. Would have been a win for the ages, but give Cink credit - his birdie on 18 in regulation to send it to the playoff was perfect. Cink is a deserving champion.

I think it was Friday on PTI, Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe (who I usually like) said it would be the worst thing for golf if Watson won this tournament. His logic was simply teh age difference between Watson and the other players.

Well, it's not like they went out to a municipal golf course and recruited some 60-year hack. Watson played golf at world-class levels for years, and clearly he has not let his skills slide. I was encouraged and gladdened by his performance in the BO -- it's a message to those of us on the back side of aging that we don't have to put out to pasture just yet!

Not a golf watching fan ordinarily, but that was a classic duel, even I got interested. You had to feel bad for Tom Watson, he had it in his grasp. The playoff was anticlimatic, though.
