Brent Musburger

Can anyone explain to me the appeal of Brent Musburger calling college football games, such as a couple coming up that I have a slight interest in? Over the past couple of years, I've informally asked probably 30+ fans I know what they thought of his commentary, and I didn't get a single positive response. I just don't get it.

Is his sports agent brother, Todd, so good that he simply makes contracts happen? Doesn't ABC poll fans about what they think of broadcasters before they hire them? Can anyone explain to me the appeal of Brent Musburger calling college football games, such as a couple coming up that I have a slight interest in? Herb Kirkstreet I get, Al Michaels I get, Bob Costas, Shoening and Craig Way on the radio, etc. Some of these might not be your favorites, but I'd lay money I wouldn't get 30 negatives in a row on any of them.

Someone please splain this to me...

I like Herbstreit as a color guy, but BM makes me have a BM. They may as well throw South up there.

Ron Franklin is the man.

Why do you repeat questions in your post?

He does a good job most of the time. Seems genuinely excited when teams score. He also had the memorable call when Ricky set the record in '98.

Bob Costas?

I love Brent Musburger. I know he chops names and makes some goofy statements, but he is entertaining enough. And I think he tends to favor Texas.

OK, there you go. Some BM fans. Just haven't met any face-to-face. I agree that he loves the game. I just don't care for his commentary, and he doesn't do his homework anymore.

I'll also agree that he has a passion for the game but he tends to be a homer towards whatever team is favored in the game. Rewatch our '96 Championship game with Vermeil. He seemed to slobber all over NU until Roll Left happened.

I think Herbie keeps him in check to some degree these days but his partiality can be somewhat glaring at times IMHO.

Honestly, who cares if the announcers do their homework? They're there to tell us down and yardage and who caught the pass. Even then they're not really needed. I get annoyed sometimes by annoying commentators, but I've never been offended because someone didn't "do his homework."

I'm going to throw myself to the lions. I love Musburger, and Ron Franklin has slipped lately. I think when Franklin and Gottfried called the ESPN saturday night game, he was great, now he just sounds bored and disgruntled. I like Musburger calling the game, because he slobbers on whoever is hot at the moment and really pumps the home team.

I did not like BM a while back, but I really like him now. Heard him doing a college basketball game the other day.... not so good.

That pair makes my ears bleed! Just be quiet every now and then. Must be paid by the word.
I suspect BM gets his choice of games due to seniority, not so much due to expertise. He has said he loves Austin so he often picks UT home games as long as there is not another classic game somewhere and, of course, if it is on prime time.

I just want him and KH to NOT talk incessantly every now and then. We are not dense, most of us anyway. Make your point and let us watch. It is not radio.

Ok, I am going to follow my own wishes and quit talking. Enjoy the silence:

Now wasn't that refreshing?!?!?

Big Brent fan, nothing gets you pumped for a big game like "You're looking Live...", but I turn down the tv and put Craig and Keith on the radio. Ashamed to admit I also like Verne and Gary even though they think the sun rises and sets in Tebows ***.

BM keeps his job because the network knows people like us will watch football no matter what; BM is the very best at keeping people who are not interested in the game watching it. People who do not know much about football do not catch on to the fact that he is not educating them or rendering opinions that are little but surface value. He makes boring games interesting to them and plays to both sides of the ball. He will be all excited about Texas one minute and loading the praise on Nebraska the next.

He does this better than anybody else. If you had guys who have a good handle on what was going on explaining in depth what is developing it would be interesting to that part of the audience which is going to watch no matter what.

The key is to keep the people without much knowledge or interest sitting their on their couches watching the commercials that pay the freight for the network.

That is why BM is doing the games.

I will say this, if i never hear the world chaos again it would be too soon. Every single god damn time they came back from commercial orevery time Nebraska did something good it was "BCS CHAOS!!!" this or "This could lead to CHAOS!!!" "MORE BCS CHAOS UNFOLDING!". STOP SAYING CHAOS YOU OLD BAG!

Brent did back us when he said he thought there was still one second on the clock. Of course there was but he did back up the correct call.

Agreed, daytonhorn. Keith couldn't have sounded more disappointed every time he realized Texas had a positive play in '06. Fortunately, he did not seem lucid enough to realize every time Texas had a positive play in '06.

I enjoy Musburger and I agree with those who say Ron Franklin is The Man. I'd rather hear him than just about anyone except Keith Jackson.
