Breakfast Tacos

I have about 15 girlfriends coming to visit in June from all around the country. I want to pick up breakfast tacos one morning while they're here. I hate to start WWIII, but where should I get them? I always just get Taco Shack or Rudy's because they're so convenient. I know there are a number of good places on the east side -- I just haven't been to any of them in 5+ years.

So, what's good these days?

I like:
Rosie's Tamale House on 71
Taco Xpress
Garibaldi's
Mi Madre's

I want to try Taco Shack, I've heard good things. I'm just on the wrong side of town.

We have a really great thread on breakfast tacos that we should thumbnail to the top of the page for easy reference. I personally like Taco Shack, but some other favorites on the board are Juan and a Million, Tamale House and Maria's Taco Xpress. Someone will list more for you.

Can't think of the name of it right now, but the place to the east of Bert's BBQ on MLK (Janitzio??) has really good breakfast tacos at a great price.

Thanks very much for the recommendations! I knew I could count on y'all.

I remember that years ago Juan in a Million, Cisco's, and Mi Madres were all the rage, but I think some of that was just people wanting to be contrarian and thinking that if it came from the east side, it must be good.

I think we'll probably pick up Rosie's (will have to try those soon, thanks!) or Taco Shack for convenience the weekend my friends are here, but I am definitely going to give some of the other places mentioned a try.

El Chilito makes some great ones too. They are just down the road from Mi Madre's. But you cannot go wrong with Mi Madre's either. Mi Madre's is now open on Sundays, fyi.

If you go to Rosie's, make sure you hit the one on the Backyard side (south side of 71, I guess?). It's more of a shack, but theirs are a lot better than the restaurant on the other side.

Probably not in your neck oif the woods, but Ken's Taco House on Dessau just north of Rundberg is awesome. I love that place.

Maria's taco X-Press, but you need to get the Migas tacos.

ken's kck *** and your friends will marvel at their ridiculous size.

*Ken's is closed on Sunday. I always forget that and get really pissed off.

Agree with all the others mentioned, but I'll throw out something a little different. Dan's Hamburgers on Manchaca & Ben White. They're big, delicious, and have some great fresh green hot sauce.

If you don't get the migas tacos at Nueva Onda, then you will have failed your mission. Head south on South Congress, and take the last diagonal street (College Ave) to the right just before you hit Oltorf. If you hit the HEB, you went too far.

Juanita's Tacos on 5th just West of Lamar. Best kept secret in Austin. She crushes the ingredients into the eggs. Delicious.

Nueva Onda is indeed greatness, but I have to agree on La Mexicana bakery - there haven't been many saturday mornings recently that I haven't been in one of those places.

Jim Bob's in Bee Cave are well worth the drive.

You can also get one hell of an order of french toast too!

A small place in Cedar Park, Taqueria Tapatia makes the best I've ever had. I'll often get 2-3 chorizo/egg/cheese, and also take a carnitas torta for lunch or dinner later. They use tons of good white queso.

Total bill is like $5.

i got 'the shack taco' for breakfast the other day, chorizo, egg, potato, and cheese, and was pretty disappointed.

will definitely try some of these other places though. i can't believe i've lived here for 4 years and haven't tried Juan in a Million.

Thanks for all the suggestions, folks. It sounds like I have a lot of breakfast tacos to try between now and when my friends come.
