I have been growing the Brandywine for 5 years now. Its probably the best tasting tomatoes i have ever had. I was wondering if any here has grown this variety before. In my experience it is very hard to grow. Its one of the few varietys that man has not altered yet. Anyone have any input on the Brandywine?

I'm growing my first Brandywine right now. The damn vine is gargantuan! The tomatoes are taking forever, but they should be getting ripe in the next few weeks, and I am definitly looking forward to it.

Do you keep the seeds and grow your own from year to year? I'm interested in doing that, but I don't know how, I'm new to the whole gardening thing.

The the seeds i have are carried over from the early 1900's. The brandywines are a late crop. But you will find that the wait is well worth it. Just a small tip. Pick them a little early. When the bottoms start to turn pink. They seem to get cracks if you wait to pick them. As for the seeds. I use one tomatoe and clean the seeds from it. then i place them in a glass jar with water for about 7 days. After that i take them out of the jar and place on a plate outside to let them dry for another 7 days. Then i put them in an envelope and use them the next year. Another tip is to not eat another kinda of tomatoe at the same time you eat a Brandywine. The acids from the tomatoes do not mix well. I learned this the hard way. It will leave a nasty taste in your mouth. My plants this year are about 8 foot tall. I had to build special cages for them. We get so much rain here in Nw Arkansas that its hard to keep fungus and bacteria under control. Brandywine are very drought tolerant. My dad lives near Wichita falls and his have done well for the past few years. I was very surprised because Brandywine came from the northeast part of the country.

How do you think they would do in Austin? I am always interested in trying a new variety. Any chance you could mail me a few seeds?
