TORONTO -- The Blue Jays added a pair of players on Monday, signing outfielder Jason Lane and infielder Brandon Fahey to Minor League contracts that included invitations to attend Spring Training with the big league club.
With Lane and Fahey in the fold, the Blue Jays have now signed seven players this winter to Minor League deals with spring invites. Toronto has been limited financially after deciding to lower its payroll to around $85 million, having operated under an estimated $97 million budget last season.
Lane, 32, split last season between Triple-A Scranton (Yankees) and Triple-A Pawtucket (Red Sox), hitting .233 with 18 home runs and 60 RBIs across 110 games. In six big league seasons, including tours with the Astros and Padres, Lane has hit .241 with 61 homers and 189 RBIs over 497 games. His best offensive season came in 2005, when he batted .267 with 26 homers and 78 RBIs with Houston.
Fahey, 28, hit .226 with nine doubles, two triples and 12 RBIs in 58 games last season with the Orioles, who selected the infielder in the 12th round of the 2002 First-Year Player Draft. In three seasons with Baltimore, Fahey hit .224 with two home runs and 36 RBIs in 189 games.
This winter, the Blue Jays also signed pitchers Mike Maroth and Matt Clement, catchers Michael Barrett and Raul Chavez and infielder Randy Ruiz to Minor League contracts.
