Brake Shoe Help

Well, I changed out the front brake shoes on my truck, because I though they were sqealing... turns out, it was the back breaks (they were worn down).. So now I've changed all 4, and guess what, they are still sqeaking...

Wtf? Old break dust? Do I need to wear the new pads in a bit?

Thanks in advance.

As long as it isnt a grinding you are hearing and there is no shimmy when you apply pressure to the brakes, you should be fine. Check and make sure the rotors on the front, and drums on the rear are not worn, or have any grooves in them. If they do, take them to a shop and have them grind the grooves out, provided they are not too deep. Also, you may try rebleeding your brake lines, just to make sure. Squeeking is a sign of poor contact somewhere. Then, try using an air compressor to blast out some of that brake dust. See if this helps a bit.

Some brake pads are much noisier than others. If you do the job yourself (or ask for it), you should use an anti-squeal goop on the back of the brake pads, where they contact the caliper. It makes an enourmous difference - you can get the stuff at any auto parts store.

How advisable is it to do this yourself? I have done it when I was in HS but it has been awhile...

There is also this gell-like substance that you can put on the BACK on the pad (not the part that contacts the rotor) that is supposed to help...how it works? i have no idea, but that is specifically what it is for. Also, the old pads used to use asbestos in them and those did not squeel. Now they make them without it and many brands tend to squeel more.
