Boston in a week...Red Sox Tickets?

So I'm having a dilemma that I think is pretty common: I'd like to get tickets to a professional sporting event but don't want to just bend over and take it...

Headed to Boston next Wednesday for an extended weekend. I've been a red sox fan since I was in 8th grade so my main focus is to see the sox. They're in town playing The A's (enjoyable for the Huston Street/Texas connection? Yes.).

As would be expected, the only place I'm finding tickets are on ticket houses, ebay, craigslist, etc. All for well above face value ($26 dollar bleacher seats going for $80 - 100).

Any suggestions? Am I just being naive and need to suck it up and take it? Personal experiences?

Suck it up and do it. Parks like Fenway are not going to be around forever.

I had a great time. The seats are narrow, if you are a large guy you will feel cramped.

Jonclas:

I am going to be in Boston that weekend for the Bruce Springsteen concert. Bruce is playing Saturday night in Foxboro. I have two extra tickets that I am not going to be able to use. They are very good lowers, next to the stage on row 24. I will sell them to you for face value plus whatever ticketmaster charged. I would rather sell them to you than to some scalper. Let me know asap.

Just bought two tickets to the Red Sox/Yankees game in August....last series between the two clubs at Yankee Stadium (and I am going to the Wed. night game to boot; Thursday is a day game).

Never been to Yankee Stadium so I figured if I'm going to do it, might as well do it right and ranch up on tickets to see them play the beloved Red Sox.

Counting down the days......

That sounds great, but I have plans for that night (Saturday, right?). I didn't even know bruce was playing. Thanks for the thought, but I'm sure you'll have no problems getting someone to pick those up.

Yeah, I'll probably end up having to suck it up, but I was just wondering if anyone would have some "tricks of the trade" they could share.

I'm 6'1 200, but I'm assuming some discomfort. Luckily I'm going with a few girls that are smaller than me so I should be able to take some of their space.

Any tips on pre-game? Two of the girls I'm going with moved from Texas in the last 6 months and aren't really sports fans, so I'm not expecting them to know what's what.

You can buy tickets from the scalper cartel around Fenway on game days. Scalpers are easy to recognize (degenerate-looking ********), and they do not negotiate much. Hardly any "regular people" sell tickets. Expect $80+ for bleachers unless the weather is crappy. I tend to buy from websites (stubhub, craiglist, etc.) to avoid dealing with the cockroaches (they're even worse if you're selling; they do NOT like competition, and I found out the hard way!).

If you happen to be active-duty military, you can get a pair of standing room tickets for $7 each, starting 2 hours before gametime. Line up at Gate B.

There are a dozen bars within a stone's throw of Fenway. Game On, Cask & Flagon, and Boston Beerworks are good bets. Beerworks has the best beer, Game On has the best TVs, and Cask is just Cask. It probably has the most "local" crowd.

Here's some good ticket and gameday advice from the blog of one of my friends: White Rhino Report

Go to the gate right next to the Green Monster about an hour or so before the game. They have extra tickets you can buy. I highly recommend the Pavilion Standing Room Only tickets for $25. This is a new section that has counters for your beer and food, easy bathroom and bar access, and it's shaded (very important on sunny hot summer days).

I went in July and we got 4 tickets on a perfect Saturday against Seattle with no problem. Everyone in the bleachers was getting baked by the sun while we enjoyed shade and a nice breeze (and no beer or bathroom lines). By far the best bargain at Fenway if you don't mind standinng.

The only downside is that you have to enter the park immediately to keep scalpers from buying all the tickets. They have lots of other tickets in other sections available at face value. I don't think you'll have any problem getting tickets against the A's, eseecially if you go to a weekday game.

The other option is to watch Craigslist and ebay for the Pavilion Standing Room Only tickets. They go for around $35 typically.

wait and scalp

i went to a red sox game this year (while traveling for work) and had no problems buying a single ticket for $25 (face value was $50 and i offered $25, no problems) walking from the subway stop to the stadium. of course it was a Monday night vs. the Royals, and who knew Lester would throw a no-hitter

just get on the subway, follow the crowd, and ask around. a good spot for pre-game is on the street behind the green monster - lots of sports bars/pubs.

wow, you're going to have a blast. the number of cute gals in red sox jersey's is enough reason to go. seriously.

I'll be there for a game on the 16th. I can't wait.

I have SRO tickets that I got off of stubhub, but I don't know if it's the pavilion SRO tickets. how can i figure that out?

So I took the plunge and went to Friday's game (the first without Manny, first with Jason Bay). I had an amazing time! What a beautiful stadium, and my seats were pretty decent: centerfield bleachers, 36, 5 rows back. Just to the right of the red sox bullpen. I was all set to barehand a big papi homer, but didn't get the chance.

I met some great people in boston, but I think I'm for sure just going back to see another game.

Oh, I went the ebay route, and ended up paying $75 per ticket. No regrets.

Good times never seemed so good! (so good, so good, so good!)
