Having all these Republican candidates talk about Border Security in Texas elections makes me wonder if the candidates are dumber than Rick Perry or simply believe the electorate is dumber than Rick Perry. Growing up around cattle, I've certainly stepped in stuff with the smells like their Border Security message.
Seriously. Our border with Mexico stretches from San Diego to Brownsville. People got across, over and under and around a much shorter and heavily guarded Berlin Wall -- a border that had no regular commercials crossings, whereas billions of dollars worth of goods and services cross the Mexican border every month and hundreds of thousands of people cross for legitimate business and recreational reasons. We can't set up a several mile deep "demilitarized zone" with machine guns like North Korea does to keep it citizens in and outsiders out.
The National Guard has no training or utility in the sort of duties that would actually catch illegal crossers, like say Border Patrol agents or Sheriff's Deputies in border counties. It's like sending troop of Boy Scouts over to fix a car that needs a valve job.
Now if Hummers full of Zeta's armed with submachine guns crossed the border in force, bringing with them armed jihadists, then the national guard would have some utility. That's not the border security problem we have, no matter how scary the speeches.
