Have any of y'all read The Wake of Forgiveness by Bruce Machart? Great freakin' book. Machart apparently teaches at Lone Star College (Old North Harris Community College). Book and bio information on this native Texas writer.

Wake, a book about a South Texas family, it reminds me of McCarthy meets McMurtry. Book trailer from Houghton Mifflin.

I'm really impressed with the quality of great authors coming from the State. Machart got incredible reviews from the New York Times, WSJ, Texas Monthly, B&N, etc. Justin Cronin's (Rice) The Passage
was not only bad ***, but superbly written also. These guys are true artists. And then, I just finished Neptune's Inferno
by James Hornfischer (Austin), who may becoming our generation's Stephen Ambrose. That may sound crazy...but his books are that good.

There are some worthy successors to Larry and Cormac. Who said Texans are illiterate?

Thanks for the recommendations.

I've got tons of non-fiction Texas history recommendations if anybody cares to hear about them.

Let's see'em BevoIncognito. I just finished reading Empire of the Summer Moon about the rise and fall of the Comanches. Fascinating unbiased account of the frontier in Texas during the late 1700's through late 1800's.

My father and uncle highly recommend The High Plains written by Walter Webb back in the 1930's as well as The Texas Rangers
by the same author.
