I sure hope that Bone plays in the Big 12. These are the types of matchups that would be a joy to see on a regular basis.
Griner's stats are impressive against one of the other top rated post players...beat Bone in the big 3 statistical categories for post players. But stats don't always tell the full story. And Dulles got the W.
I hope there is some footage of the game somewhere. Would love to see the "monster slam."
How is it that there is no write-up on this game? I looked on the Houston Chronice site and there is nothing there! If this were the number 1 and 2 nationally ranked boys players I think there would have been some coverage. Sexism in sports has not gone away. This matchup deserved some coverage. If anyone has found anything other than what is on the Baylor boards please provide the link.
Try this link. It has a link to a post that is more descriptive about the game.
I think, reviewing the stats posted on the Baylor link, that the two basically cancelled each other out. Kelsey's team won which was the biggest thing, as far as both were concerned, I would think.
If you youtube brittney griner there's a video of brittney vs bone but its not long at all just showes Griner dunk and post up on bone who look like they are 6'3 and 6'6
Not sure where the stats that were listed in the previous link came from, but these stats show that Griner clearly outplayed Bone. That is an impressive stat line. Griner had twice as many blocked shots as Bone did rebounds.
"The Vikings got the win, but the 6-foot-8 Griner won round one as she scored 24 points, 12 rebounds, blocked 11 shots, had three steals, six assists and a dunk. Bone, a 6-foot-5 senior scored 18 points and five rebounds in the game."
Are you kidding me? Look at Griner's numbers for the tournament. She may break every record that Courtney Paris has set in the Big 12. 75 rebounds, 50 blocked shots and 9 dunks in this tournament!
"Griner, a Baylor-bound signee scored 123 points, 75 rebounds, 50 blocks and nine dunks in five games during the tournament.
While Griner had better numbers, it's tough to know for sure who outplayed who in the different facets of the game.
Bone's teammate had 24 points. I'm sure it's listed somewhere, but perhaps Bone didnt take as many shots as Griner since that Dulles guard was having a huge scoring night. Maybe Bone's field goal percentage was higher? I haven't seen those stats yet.
Granted, Griner had an incredible amount of blocks, but how may of those blocks were against shots taken by Bone?
I guess it depends on how you look at things, as far as raw stats.
It would be nice to have Bone here with Gayle and Reed and being able to make Griner work for everything against a very formidable trio of interior players for the Longhorns.
The point difference is negligible. It is the number of rebounds and blocked shots that caught my eye...not to mention the 6 assists. Griner is going to be a terror to score against in the paint.
Griner may be a terror but so is Courtney Paris and the Sooners have been beaten. I expect our coaching staff will have a plan to counter Griner. It's not like we will be undersized or slow inside ourselves.
