Cameron Parker piece on the Rice game, Burnt Orange Nation, incorrectly states that the last Rice victory in Austin was 1963. It was 1965, 20-17 I believe.

What! Texas was the undefeated National Champion in 1963. Every aging 'Horn knows this fact. Thar is kinda sloppy
fact checking and makes you wonder what else does he state that is wrong? I do not do twitter so I cannot inform him of his error.

The Longhorns head back home to host Rice

Probably just a typo.

In my Official Typographical Error rankings ("OTE"), the typed character must be adjacent to the intended character to count as a typo. All other characters pressed are attributed to incorrect research. Since "1965" is correct, only "1964" or "1966" would qualify as typos. Mr. Parker typed "1963" so OTE is therefore ruled against his research.

That game was another big strike against Mackovic. Then came Route 66 vs. UCLA.

Back then, losing to Rice would have been worse than losing to Kansas. (I'm talking football, of course)

:ku: > :rice:

I was at the game in 1965. It was a 20-17 defeat. I was also at the TCU defeat, 25-10, the loss at SMU, 31-14 and watched the 27-24 loss to Arkansas in, yes, you guessed it, Fayetteville. After the 1961-1964 seasons I was in shock. I didn't think 6-4 was a possibility. Sure as hell didn't expect us to duplicate that record in 1966 and 1967.
If I'm not mistaken we beat Rice 10-6 in 1963. But don't ask me what I had for breakfast yesterday.

Sorry, but I don't buy the typo - it was sloppy sports reporting. Look it up before you report a claim like that!

It's... nothing. He was making a point that it's been a while. If you're old enough to remember those games, you're probably forgetting where you left your glasses too. I don't decry your entire occupation over a little slip-up.

Ugh, i was in school during this pitiful game. If i recall correctly, and it is hard to tell in the video, it was pouring rain all night.
Yep, it was a bad night, rain and all. Was there with my boss (a UT grad, who had a couple of spare tickets) and a colleague (an A&M grad) who enjoyed the evening despite the rain.

I was a law student in '94 and was driving to the game from Austin when I hit a rain storm so bad I had to pull over and decided discretion was better part of valor and I wanted no part of driving home from Houston in middle of night in bad rain storm. I turned around and watched game at sports bar on Lamar and was just glad I didn't risk my life to see in person that monstrosity. I will say it dang sure seemed like it would rain whenever Texas had the ball and then it would stop every time Rice had it.

That was a real stunner. Couldn't believe we lost to Rice. But those were the Mackovic years. But that wasn't his worst loss as a few years later came the infamous loss to UCLA dubbed "Rout 66" when we put up a whopping 3 points to their 66.

OTOH, there was also the victory against Nebraska for the very first Big XII title in 1996 (back when beating NU was a Really Big Deal). Strange times, those were.
