Boiled peanuts

Bye Week

250+ Posts
I was at lunch today with a group that included an Alabama contingent, which was giddy about the upcoming peanut harvest (?) and the prospect of eating as many boiled peanuts as they could stuff in their faces in the upcoming weeks. I have never heard of this culinary phenonenom before. Have I been missing something, or was I simply sharing a meal with folks who have been unfortunately deprived of sufficient exposure to barbeque, chili, and Tex Mex? Please advise.

Run! As far as I'm concerned, boiled peanuts taste like smelly cardboard. Maybe you have to have grown up eating them to like them.

Boiled peanuts might be one of the worst things I've ever had. We bought, while in South Carolina, to try them out. My mom threw all the bags out the window while on the highway because they were so gross. My mom is totally against litering. I think my heart stopped seeing my mom do this.

So how are you supposed to eat them? Do they eat them as a side dish like corn or mashed potatoes or like roasted peanuts? I enjoy peanuts in certain asian dishes so hell, maybe those boys from Alabam are onto something.

I like them...Chinese people eat boil peanuts also. It's salty and boiling them just gives them a different taste. I like the softer texture also.

The impression I got is that you buy a big bag of them and eat them like a redneck edamame, squeezing them out of the shell into your mouth.

A guy I was in the Army with ate them when we were in the field--had cans of them--alright--nothing special

"the taste like smelly cardboard" try not eating the shells.

They are OK. Not my favorite but very similar to edamame, and good eating for the most part. Mainly I think it's the salt I like in both boiled peanuts and edamame.

Texas boy, lived in Bama for 5 years and GA the past 15 or so.

Redneck edaname is a great description. Ones done wrong are very bad. However, if you get some that are done right, they are DAMN good. There is a little stand in Flowery Branch, GA near Lake Lanier. That old man makes the best I have ever had. They are fantastic with beer especially when you them directly from the pot.

I"m going to try to make some pretty soon. You use green peanuts and boil them for several hours with lots of salt. Even better if you use some crab boil in there with them.

Edamame is basically boiled soy beans. You pop them out of the pod and eat them. Great zero fat protein, for you dieters.

Redneck edamame. Absolutely perfect description!

My sister lived in Pensacola, FL for about ten years and we had them every time we went out to visit-- I love them, but I could see how others might not like them.

I tried them out of the can once, they were terrible. They are much better fresh.

You can find them at roadside stands all over the SE (Georgia, FL, Alabama), but I've never seen any here in Texas. But they're quite easy to make. You get a couple of pounds of raw peanuts (aka green peanuts-- not already roasted) and you boil them in salty water until they get soft. I like to use Cajun crawfish boil spices as well. You can typically buy the raw peanuts at Sun Harvest or Whole Foods when they are in season.

If they have a bag of green peanuts at the farmers market, I'll make some this weekend and put some pictures up.

I'd never heard of them either until I went to a race at Talladega. The vendor could not believe that I'd never heard of them. He gave me a few and they were nothing short of disgusting.

Alton Brown did them on a show. The food network website should have his recipe for anyone interested in making them.

I grew up getting boiled peanuts from the small town gas stations in East Alabama. Just pop the whole peanut in your mouth and spit out the shells like you would a sunflower seed. They do have the flavor of a salty black eyed pea. They go great with football.

1 Big ol' Country Pot (Ok, a regular big ole pot will do too)
2 24 oz. Bags of "green" peanuts or Natural Raw Peanuts
1 Pack of Smoked Pork Neck Bones
1/2 cup or 3/4 cup of Salt (can use sea salt as well)
