Bob Knight: greatness

he had me lol after we took that extremely quick 3 pointer, , as in 0 passes in the front court.

if you missed it he said "I almost jumped up and called timeout after that shot"

And one other thing, I found interesting. His four pass minimum, unless there is a wide open lane to drive. I started counting, and guess what people, it works. My sample size was small, but next time I watch I'm counting. To me, it seemed like after 3 passes, it was almost certainly(80% or more), a foul on OSU or a "good" shot. Good to me means a good look.

Now of course this doesn't account for our awful layup, putback problem.

Still, I found myself yelling "pass" at the screen instead of "oh no'.

There is a reason he has won so many games.

Once Texas starting sharing the ball and getting better scoring opportunities (including trips to the foul line) they started getting back into the game and took control.

They didn't go to the line but four times last night. Just sayin'.

Knight's probably the best basketball tactician ever. People have complained about his analysis, but I guarantee, if you actually listen, you're going to learn something about basketball.

Bobby Knight has some great insight and his technical assessments are tremendous, but the ole pass the ball 4 times rule is nothing special. Pass the ball and make the D move, and shazam the O gets a better look, no magic there. His also says dumb stuff like "I wouldn't take out tired players, they are young and should be able to run all day." But then he is critical when Hamilton makes a foul when it is an obvious "I am tired" foul. He also commented about Pittman not dunking with 2 hands, when Pittman traveled and just sorta went up. He also never commented on Moses pushing in the back crap. The guy should have fouled out in the first 15 minutes. I prefer Ron Franklin any day over his excessive commentary.

Yeah, Bob has work to do as a color guy and he does absolutely no preparation (when J'Covan came in the game he said that he is known as a great on-the-ball defender), but the guy knows what he is talking about and you can learn a lot about basketball just listening to the guy.

Bob Knight is a basketball genius, personally he's an a-hole, and as a color man he's a rookie. If he really wants to the do the color commentary and not just sit in a studio it might take some time but I think he'll figure it out and we'll get a lot more nuggets of genius and lot less stupid fluff.

Probably the worst broadcaster I've ever heard. He and Musburger over Franklin and Fran is pathetic and the typical ESPN sellout...

"They didn't go to the line but four times last night. Just sayin'."

So thats why we won.

I like Bob Knight doing the games. He's kinda slow sometimes, but actually talks about what's going on in the game and makes salient points. I actually come away with a bit more knowledge about the game. Much better than the same old ******** "quick facts" about certain players and inane trivia.

HOOSIERS!!

ps. In the 50s with no shot clock, the Class B Texas high school team of Buna Cougars... led by Coach M.N. "Cotton" Robinson, got beat up in a state tournament game with something like 80 hung on them, and afterwards the coach vowed never again. From then on, his players made only bounce passes, took their time and worked for a shot, often as much as 3 minutes on the clock. Finally would hit a short-to-mid jumper, usually a turn-around jumper. Nails. Dominated the game for a while. And played full court press the entire game.

To this day, more than any single element of a game, I hate bad passes. Passes into traffic. Passes inside-into-traffic. Next to that, a player in a swarm of players, just getting the ball, AND PUTTING IT ON THE FLOOR!!

He may be a genius but, I got sick of his over-talking after each possession and second guessing their play every time someone missed a shot or turned it over. Sometimes just shut up and let it go. I remember his 76 Indiana team and was a big fan of his and follower of his defense (I was later a high school bb coach) but I don't recall him or his Tech teams ever performing flawlessly. Maybe I'm being petty, but I simply thought he over analyzed to the point of explaining why every failed possession could have been corrected. Sometimes you just miss a 12 footer or get beat to the spot and it wasn't because of execution... Otherwise, he's great

I actually enjoy listening to him for a couple of reasons. He offers explanations to many of his statements and he talks about the game and all the players rather than just one player or some stupid off court crap. Entertaining... no. Informative... yes.

only 4 free throws isn't the cause for winning, but it sure helps a whole bunch. I was a little surprised OSU didn't start fouling a whole bunch in the second half. We were in the 1 and 1 so early, but then again OSU didn't have much depth. For much of the game they only had three players score.

one other thing, in terms of potential. Can you imagine how good this team could be if we could learn to do the rebound putback correctly? Or maybe it's better to say, make 80% of your shots within 3 feet.

Any guesses as to our % within 3 feet? My guess is about 50% at most. Leaving probably 8-10 points a game, add that in and we're a #1 seed.

In terms of ending possessions, which was the context of your post, they only went to the line four times.

They shot two FTs three times, and one once, for a total of 7.

I don't care for Knight as a basketball commentator. Didn't care much for him as a person but appreciated his knowledge of the game.

The best I have ever heard/seen was Al McGuire. He knew that the game itself was the attraction, not him. He knew when to talk and what to say that would add to understanding was had happened and what might happen. He was great and I miss him. Knight , Vital and all the rest of the guys that do should study up on how Al did it.
