According to this IBD link Wikileaks has uncovered a memo sent to Hillary saying the Japamese government did not want BO to apologize
from link
'A heretofore secret cable dated Sept. 3, 2009, was recently released by WikiLeaks. Sent to Secretary of State Clinton, it reported Japan's Vice Foreign Minister Mitoji Yabunaka telling U.S. Ambassador John Roos that "the idea of President Obama visiting Hiroshima to apologize for the atomic bombing during World War II is a 'nonstarter.'"

The Link

Certainly it is, based on all his other apologies, something that might have happened.
Interesting if true. I do not know, is most of the stuf Wikileaks leaks accurate?

Edit to correct Nikileaks to Wikileaks although Waldo is right. That would be a great name for a porn site

Clearly, Obama doesnt truly understand the concept of american exceptionalism nor does he understand historically what america faced and what would have happened with a land invasion of japan. he is the only american president to bow before the emperor of japan. this is nothing new. this president loves to bow to foreign dignitaries and leaders.

No I don't care. It's funny to see all you conserves all knotted up about Obama but are perfectly fine when W was smooching the saudi king.

you should get out of your mom's basement more often. In the rest of the world, it is customary to greet someone with a kiss on the cheek, I did it the other nioght while having dinner with a group from France. It is interesting that our former president who didnt like to travel, understood simple pleasantries, while our enlightened and world traveled president doesnt get it.

How sad is it that even the people who got nuked are smart enough to know that it would be stupid for the US to apologize for the atomic bombings. However, we have dumbasses here in the US who don't mind playing Monday morning quarterback and second guessing Truman 60+ years after he made the decision (which was a no-brainer). (Funny how none of them had the balls to second guess him while he was alive.)

Probably no single decision made during the war saved more lives than using the bombs. Truman should have gotten the Nobel Peace Prize for doing it and should have a massive memorial in his honor in Japan.

Care to comment on your complete and baffling ignorance on international culture?

A bit rich considering you appear to be ignorant as to why exactly the Japanese nixed the apology.

It wasn't because of culture, but because the government thought the anti-nukes crowd would use the apology to bolster their stance against nukes.

For those who actually bothered to read the typed out link:

The Japanese feared the apology would be exploited by anti-nuclear groups and those opposed to the defensive alliance between Japan and the U.S.

The reasons were political, not cutural.

The rest of the story: Obama did not offer to apologize for nuking japan. some anti nuclear groups over there suggested it and the japanese government said we should not do it.

From this bit, the insane project that it was obama's idea to apologize.

As for American Exceptionalism, maybe he does understand it. To many it means that their god picked us to be different and superior to everybody else and to be the light unto the world. Everybody should get in line behind us and do as we do.

American Exceptionalism is a stupid idea and in today's world very dangerous. We are not protected by the stone age god and to think we are immune from the vagaries of history is not only delusionary but leads us into all sorts of stupid adventures. Like thinking we can create democracies in Afghanistan or Iraq. Or resist the urge of viet namese to kick foreigners out of their country. For that little bit of delusion we got 55,000 men killed and viet nam got stuck with bad government for a long time.

You posted, "The rest of the story: Obama did not offer to apologize for nuking japan. some anti nuclear groups over there suggested it and the japanese government said we should not do it. "

well that would change things. the note was from the Japanese Gov't to the obama gov't

but if it all came about because of Japanese anti nuke groups that would make a difference.

do you have a link reporting that?

Rush Limbaugh claimed that when he visited Japan in 2009, Obama "wanted ... to apologize for dropping the bomb on Niros -- Hiroshima and Nagasaki."

Limbaugh based his comments on an Investor's Business Daily editorial claiming that a cable released by Wikileaks revealed that Obama had "plans to visit Nagasaki and Hiroshima to apologize for winning the war with the atom bombs."

But the Wikileaks cable cited by Limbaugh and IBD shows nothing of the sort. The cable, if authentic, describes a 2009 meeting between U.S. ambassador to Japan John V. Roos and Japanese Vice Foreign Minister Mitoji Yabunaka to discuss Obama's then-upcoming visit to Japan. The cable describes the idea of "Obama visiting Hiroshima to apologize for the atomic bombing during World War II" as a "non-starter."

But as ABC News' Jake Tapper has noted: "The cable does not state that the idea was from the U.S. Rather, Roos writes that Yabunaka thought that following President Obama's call earlier that year for a world free of nuclear weapons, anti-nuclear groups would speculate as to whether he would visit Hiroshima."

Tapper also reported that a "senior White House official asserts to ABC News that there was never any plan for the president to apologize for Hiroshima."
Good grief.

While I agree that this thread is a little silly, the spin that some anti nukes group might maybe protest if perhaps possibly BO came to Japan to apologize for the bomb so the Japanese govt sent a cable to Hillary is not very believeable to me.

The idea almost had to have been floated by the US for the Japanese to send a cable to Hilary.
