Bo Wallace Uh Oh

An interesting story in College Football Talk...it didn't take former UT junior college quarterback target Bo Wallace long to get crosswise with the Oxford, Mississippi police. He's been busted for underage possession of alcohol. Is the Mack curse at work here?

I've suggested before and I'll say it again. I suspect Mack was tipped off about this kid. MIP isn't the worst thing a player can do, but it's indicative of potentially bigger issues that this team doesn't need.

Oh PLEASE! Kids drink. It happens. They also drive too fast and have sex and many of them don't even go to school after high school. Doesn't make them bad people Get over it.

BTW, I've been to Oxford and there isn't much to do there. They have a one block town square with a palce that had some really good pizza, but other than that it is so boring that I would go back to drinking myself.

Nick,

Come on. Oxford has two fulltime motels and the Ramada opens for special event weekend.

There's that restaurant/bar over on 14th (IIRC) that brings in bands from Memphis. It would go broke on 5th or 6th in Austin, but it's a happening place for Oxford.

Then you have that restaurant West of Oxford out on Hwy 6, that has the all you can eat feed bag. Any place that has all you can eat pork chops, sirloin, catfish, fried shrimp for cheap and actually has good food is alright with me.

Some of 'em drink, drive too fast, and have sex all at the same time. You can do that when you're younger...

Cool horn you forgot they can smoke em up by burning weed in the closed up car while doing 75 in reverse through the school zone while pulling a hit on the 151 rum, and Maryanne tries to not bump her head too much on the steering wheel of the "borrowed" car... gosh being young was a thrill

It's definitely unfortunate (for Bo), but seriously, is there ANYONE on this board who NEVER had a drink of alcohol while underage as a college student?

I admit to drinking while underage, but can say that I passed on an offer by my first college roommate to do a (free) row of coke that he had cut(?) on glass. I knew it was expensive and appreciated the offer, but I politely declined. Ahh, forks in the road of life. Maybe if I had tried it I would be a drug kingpin a la Tony Montana today.

These guys get to have different rules and no, they are not allowed to drink as minors because the spotlight is on them. They sign an agreement to not do things like this, etc. So no, regardless of what you, me or anybody else did in school, they get another set of rules to have to live up to.

While I did pretty okay in school I did not have ***** lining up left and right the way players do if they want it. So I don't have a problem with them missing out on things or the expectation they will.

I never drank as un undergrad. My first drink was after I came to this country as a grad student, with my advisor. At age 23, at The Posse east back in 1986. Beer. Didn't like it. Got drunk on gin and tequila and puked many a time at the Lantana apts later but still couldn't develop a taste for alcohol. Still don't like it, except for some dry red stuff like a merlot or a chianti with some dinner.

So there. Alcohol is not some sort of religion that kids can't do without, nor is it something for which to break the law - at least so foolishly and blatantly as to get caught. If they do, it is not a big crime either though. But certainly there are many many kids who have never put themselves in a position to be caught for drinking even if they drank like fish while in college.

Anyway, if I am the UT coach and hear that a recruit had the lack of discretion to get caught (yeah that at least shows some foolishness), I would normally not take a chance on the kid. In many other things in real life, I might not hold it against the kid and would give another chance if I can watch, without much cost, whether there is a basic behavioral issue over and above making a teenage mistake. But football recruiting, especially at the QB position, is not for taking risks unless the reward is unmistakeably huge.

Saying that most people do drink while underage, is fine, but is not relevant as a criticism of what the coaching staff decided in this case.

I drank my first beer at 18 when my USMC rifle squad got some in Vietnam. Never had any before. On my return to the states I was standing inside L A International, in uniform, waiting for a flight to Amarillo and a man asked if he could buy me a drink at the airport bar. I said I wasn't old enough to drink in California. He just kind of chuckled and walked away. I never forgot the offer.

I drank quite a bit as an underage undergrad

the difference is I wasn't going to school for free because I was good at a sport
