BMW X5 vs. VW Touareg

I know this seems a little bit of an apples to oranges comparison (maybe?) but I was wondering if any of you have personal experience with either car. Namely the Touareg since it's such a new model- I know somebody here has to have one since I see them all over the place! I will probably be considering the V8 Touareg and either the 6 cyl or V8 BMW.

I have an '04 X5 and love it, but that is the old style but I drove an '08 for about 150 miles yesterday and really liked it too...I would get the V8 if $ was not that big of an issue. Also the BMW warranty is awesome.

I have a 2002 X5 6-cyl and it's been great. The service (at least in Austin) is second to none.

countdown for the Acura, Lexus, Infiniti crowd to tell you how much German cars such and the others are all "better....

We have a 2006 X5. 35k totally trouble free miles thus far which does not surprise me since I had over 150k trouble free miles with my 540, 150k with a 95 3 series, 50k with an 04 3 series, close to 200k on an 86 3 series. All of my BMW's have been great, trouble free cars. I would assume you're look into the new version of the X5 which from everyone I have seen who has one has loved it. I cannot speak on behalf of the Toureg other than to say I really like the way it looks. However, it would appear to me the Porsche Cayenne would be more comparable to the X5. I know it is basically a Toureg with Porsche bits in it. I actually think the Toureg looks better than the Cayenne, but obviously the Porsche is more in line with the X5 from an interior quality standpoint as well as from handling, drive feel, etc. I have driven the Cayenne so I can say it drives really great. Very similar to the X5 in that it feels more like a car than an SUV.

I am not sure I would consider the Acura in the same class as the V8 BMW or the Cayenne but maybe I'm wrong? The ones I've "built" online have been closer to $60-70K.

I have had a suburban and three tahoes. They're fine as long as you can get a new one every couple of years. I have decided to go foreign since I am getting married and this is the last car my dad will be buying so it needs to last a loooonnng time. For that reason, the BMW free maintenance thing is sounding pretty good. I just think the Touaregs are pretty.

However, it seems as if people that get a BMW never go to any other type of car. But people also do that with Chevys so who knows...

Yeah, I don't really think I'd consider the BMW or Touareg full-size. I'm sick of how big and truck-like my tahoes/suburban have been. Driving on streets in Houston my 2003 Tahoe has more rattles than you can imagine, and hitting potholes on Kirby feels like pieces of my car are going to fall off. Plus I don't really anticipate being in any off-road conditions.

i think the x5 is nice.
but put me in the infinity crowd.

My wife leased a Touareg and hated it. Way, way too small and just a pretty ****** car to be honest. We ditched it after about 14 months.

IMO, do not buy a VW. I thought it would be great, but a crap car and crappy service depts, will keep me from ever buying another.

My mechanic didn't like either one. Said he sees X5s all the time. As for Touareg's, he said they're way too heavy. We test drove both and we really liked the VW. ...and my wife had a Jetta so we had experience with VWs.

the prettiest version of the toureg, imo, is not the cayenne but the audi Q7(or whatever its called). not sure how different it is mechanically from either of the other two, or if the warranty or anything else is better either.

why not save some coin and get a sequoia or armada instead if you're scared of american?

It's a Lexus so I would assume it is pretty reliable and luxurious. Personally, I think it is a VERY ugly vehicle. Especially, compared to the other SUV's mentioned in this thread. Check out the Audi Q7 as someone else mentioned. Great looking car, fun to drive, and a lot of cool features.

not other than driving next to one. but from that, they seem pretty small.

oh, and here's what the new sequoia looks like:

i imagine its sister lexus will look similar this year or next.

Drove the 6 cyl and the V8 this past weekend- the V8 with a sports package is great to drive. Pretty quick, small turning radius, feels extremely tight and smooth. I like that when you slam on the brakes they brake in the back first so there's no dip in the front that causes stuff in the car to fly all over. (this might be normal but I drive an 03 Tahoe and slamming on the breaks is NOT a good experience).
Am placing an order for the V8 this week

The iPod interface adapter thing is so cool. And I use it with an iphone so when my phone rings it automatically shuts the music off and I can answer my call using the car phone bluetooth thingy or whatever.......apparently, I'm easily impressed.
