In-laws coming this weekend, and I will be taking them on a wildflower drive. Although this year should be one of the best ever, this may be a week or two early.
I am thinking it might be better to go towards Brenham and Washington County, instead of to the Willow Loop and Fredricksburg area.
Has anyone driven those areas recently, and are the flowers out in force yet? I tried the various websites and didn't find too much about this year's crop.

I'm not in Texas but call, the number below. I suspect that they will be helpful.

Royer's Round Top CafeThe Link

Also, I got this from Texas Monthly (although for obvious reasons I don't have a subscription to get the second number):

To help your search, here is a sampler of our favorite flowers and where to see them. (For up-to-the-minute information, call two excellent statewide hotlines: the National Wildflower Research Center, March 16 through May 31, 512-832-4059, and the Texas Department of Transportation, ...

Okay, the above number isn't valid anymore. TryThe Link or call 512.232.0100. The direct page on sightings isThe Link .

From LaGrange on the West or Bellville on the east, take 159 to Nelsonville, turning north through Bleiberville into Brenham. From there, depending on where "home" is, go 105 through Washington on the Brazos and back to Houston or 290 to Roundtop and back to LaGrange. There were quite a few flowers around Brenham last weekend.

Fortuneately the in-laws didn't want a long drive, as I think it was a week early. We went to the Lady Bird wildflower center and enjoyed that.
I did drive down to Port A Saturday and the flowers on IH-37 were spectacular in places.
This weekend taking relatives, may go towards Brenham area, then the next weekend to the Fredricksburg area.

My family has Royer's Cafe so if you are nearby, stop on in for lunch and tell JB that you saw me on hornfans..free stuff always comes your way. As far as bluebonnets go, Brenham has a ton. If you are going to Houston via 290, right before Hempstead is an amazing field of just blue! It's gorgeous, you'll be in for a treat!

Thanks for the props!!

I know Royer's is great from previous visits. Alas, our timing was bad, and wasn't in the area on our drive when the folks were ready to eat. But we did see great wildflowers. Anywhere around Brenham is spectacular. We went up to Washington from Chappell Hill, over to Independence, the old Baylor site, then across on FM 340 to Burton.
I recommend this route. Texas Highways website reported great bluebonnets on U.S. 290 between Burton and Brenham, as well, but we went around that section.
Plenty of bluebonnets, huge fields of golden yellow flowers, lots of Indian paintbrush, and lesser amounts of many other varieties.
This is the best wildflower show in many years due to the abundant winter rains, I encourage you to take a weekend drive to see them.
I did read on the Texas Highway Department site that the Willow City Loop is very crowded on peak weekends. If you can go during the week, sounds like the experience would be more pleasant.
It's fun to see all the people posing their kids and dogs out in the fields for photo ops.
We came across a nice longhorn ranch a few miles from Burton on 340, but there weren't a lot of flowers in the pasture.
Still seeking the holy grail bluebonnet photo, a nice longhorn standing in a big field of bluebonnets. Maybe this week, as we will be taking my mother to her high school reunion in Fredricksburg. May do the Willow City drive on the way back.

Bluebonnets are still blooming here in Austin. Willow City Loop is about a week behind due to altitude so I'd bet blue bonnets are still blooming out there for another week.
