Blue Star Cafeteria just opened about 2 weeks ago. It's on Burnet just north of 45th, by the same people behind 34th St. Cafe and Santa Rita Cantina.

We haven't been yet but popped in to grab a menu after having dinner at Sampaio's last week. The hostess was very friendly and enthusiastic and the place had a nice, low-key vibe. Looks like fancified cafeteria and comfort food.

Please post reviews/comments here!

We had an excellent meal there yesterday around 5:30 pm. Very tasty cafeteria meatloaf came with broccoli and mashed potatoes. Vegetable bowl for the wife was rated outstanding. Shared a big slice of coconut chess pie that couldn't be finished, so am enjoying that today for lunch dessert. Dinner for two with one glass of wine and one dessert was $39 with tax.

Service was prompt, friendly, helpful. Decor nicely done, upscale but not pretentious. There was a mixed clientele; several other middle aged couples early on, but younger couples coming in, too. We'll be returning.

I went there last night and was underwhelmed.... wasn't bad, just wasn't good. The alleged 8 oz ( that's one half pound folks) patty melt was no where near that size....and that's not quibbling over pre cooked wt vs cooked wt. ...it was small. That alone isn't a bad thing per se, but , for a NINE dollar burger , I'd like some volume.
The chess pie tasted like it came from the frozen food pantry at HEB....completely unremarkable at 5.95 for an average size slice.

Not many folks there, but it's new and will get a buzz now that the AAS did a mention.

All in all, I'll try it again but it won't make it if things don't improve from my first visit.

Boring. The decor was fine, service was great, but the food was bland and the menu was really, really lame. My understanding is these are the same guys that own Santa Rita (on 38th) which is absolutely horrible.

WHY CAN'T AUSTIN GET GOOD RESTAURANTS?!

F Blue Star. Wife ate there a couple of weeks ago. Restaurant double charged our credit card. Notified them, said they would take care of it, reverse the charge. Fine, accidents happen I say. Well, two weeks later it's still on our account. Wife hollered at the manager yesterday, said they are still looking at it. I spoke to Wells Fargo today, and they are just taking that extra charge off. Blue Star never did a damn thing.

yeah, but did the food suck, too ???

I found this place to be excellent. Austin has tons of good restaurants (despite the above poster's silly claim), but when you just want comfort food (i.e., no BBQ or tex mex) the pickin's seem to get pretty slim. This is just want we've been looking for.

Wife had the meatloaf, I had the pork chop. Crap cake appetizer. It was all excellent. Will definitely go back. Meatloaf was really really good.

that's funny. my bad.

it was a really good crap cake though.

I also had the meatloaf and loved it. Wife had the lasagna and it was decent. Others had burger and enjoyed it.

Comfortable decor. Contemporary but not overdone. Friendly staff and it's relatively close to my house.

solid B+

Another option for good comfort food is the BakeHouse Cafe on Manchaca, south of Ben White. Awesome burgers, and the wife's chicken pot pie was tasty and delicious (if not top-of-the-mark, still VERY good).

Had lunch there today. It was good; I'll defintiely go back.

We had the Crispy Artichoke Hearts appetizer-- was super.

I had the meatloaf-- excellent. She had the Asian Chicken Salad and said it was great.

Well, considering I started this thread, it took me a while to get there!

Finally went for dinner tonight. At around 7:30, place was about 60% full--not bad for Tuesday night. We had 2 servers; thought one was training at first, but it seemed all the tables had 2 servers. Service was great. I mentioned it was our first time and she had recommendations in all categories, also recommended a very good wine.

Started with crispy artichoke hearts; sauce was a little bland, but the artichoke was perfectly crunchy and not greasy.

Mr. 1990 had the meatloaf, which got the thumbs up. I had the cod with green beans and substituted Boursin cheese grits for the carrots. The fish was very fresh and again, non-greasy for a fried item. This scores a lot of points with me. The grits were inventive and very tasty, green beans still a little crisp (not mushy).

My only complaint is that everything on my plate could have used bout 25% less salt. B+ from me too. We'll definitely try it again.

That stretch of Burnet Road, north of 45th, has really come a long way since I was in school.

Ate at the Omletry on Sunday for the first time in a long time.

Back in the day, that part of Burnet Road merely provided poor scenery on the way to Pancho's.
