Paramount is planning on jumping ship it looks like. That would just leave Universal on the HD-DVD side, and I can't imagine they would want to lose out on all the momentum Blu-Ray is gaining. Go get your receipts for the HD-DVD players if you can still return them...
I like Blu-Ray. It's the superior format, really. Forget laserdisc, that medium got all the attention it was due. Let's hope Blu-Ray doesn't got the way of Beta-Max.
If this is true, then HD DVD is pretty much done. If it is not true then HD DVD is holding on by the skin of its teeth. Interesting to see what happens.
Seems like it will be a while before Average joe is out buying either one. A year into DVD players you could pick one up for $40. $40 barely gets you a disk.
Yeah, obviously I am not counting 97-98 as the starting point. I was in college then so my memory might be hazy, but I don't remember the technology be as widely marketed as Blueray/HD-DVD is now until 99-00.
I recently read an article that basically said there was no way either would do anything in the market. By the time the price comes down far enough to make it really feasible to switch their collections, solid state or soft form (i.e., direct downloads) would begin to dominate the market.
I have a 50-inch plasma, and like many others don't see much difference in most movies between 480p and 1080p. If the movie was designed to be shown 1080p, like some HD programming, you can tell the difference. But in film-to-dvd conversion, I don't see much difference.
The way I see it, I got a HDDVD for 179 for my xbox. It came with 6 free movies and I got 5 more for christmas (plus the first season of heroes). If it dies, I can still rent older HDDVD movies from netflix for a few years and enjoy the ones I bought. I can always get a blu ray later when they are cheaper. Either way, no big deal for me.
