That's what it seems from his POV. A bunch of jerseys are piling over the goal line and I think he just mistakenly figured one was the ballcarrier.

Reffing was tough, but I absolutely hated linesman. Give me ump, back judge, whatever. Those snap judgments for ball placement were sometimes harrowing, and I'm glad most of my games have never seen the light of day on the Internet because I'd shudder at how wrong some of those ball spots were.

That’s how it was in the bad ole days before replay. Worst I ever saw was the Mike Renfro non-TD call against the Steelers in 1980. Might have cost the Oilers the Super Bowl that year.
