Blacks BBQ

Coming down from Aledo tomorrow for the game.
Never been to Lockhart for BBQ and was thinking about Blacks.
Is this a good idea or should I consider Smittys or Kreuz?
Or is there a better alternative in Austin?
Any advice would be appreciated.

In Austin you should try Franklin's. In Lubbock I like Chisolm Trail. Great bbq with less hype and line. That is if they are still there and of the same standard they were the last time I was there.

Go to Lockhart for your bbq. Any of the 3 you mentioned beat any joint in Austin. Can't go wrong w/ any of them. Chisholm Trail - also in Lockhart - is good too, but it's cafeteria-style food more than a bbq joint; think Underwoods.

Definitely like Black's. I haven't been to the other two but only because whenever we go to Lockhart to meet my brother, they always want to go to Black's. One of these days I want to try the others out as well.

Franklin's is awesome, but I don't think the hype has died down any so you'll be waiting a few hours. I favor Smitty's in Lockhart.

I think everyone has their preference, but all 3 are good. Kreuz is my favorite, but I would eat any any of the three. See which one has the shortest line and go there.
Chisholm Trail is OK, but I would not go to it over the others.

Compared to Lockhart, Austin has a bunch of weenie-grilling places that claim to sell BBQ.

Hit Blacks, and hit it hard. Top notch. But for my money, its Kruez's. You can't go wrong, honest to God.

Nothing wrong with Blacks, and they have more choices of side dishes if you want them.
Kreuz's is excellent, with a national reputation.
But there is just something about Smitty's. The building is ancient, primal, like crawling into a caveman's lair. You expect there to be charcoal drawings of dinosaurs on the walls. I took my cousin from Phoeniz there a few years ago, with his two daughters (who attended UT at the time). One of them said she was glad she got to see it, although she was a vegetarian, because it was "The Church of Bar-b-que."
That about summed it up.

In Taylor seek out Davis Grocery.

There is something really special about old school African American BBQ.

It's hard to find it this far from east Texas and it's worth it.

In Lockhart I prefer Smitty's and Kreuz over Black's. If you feel like driving a little further, City Market in Luling is also a strong choice.

Mueller's in Taylor is a worthy detour on your way in to Austin.

Still haven't had Franklin's yet but its reputation has surpassed all others.
