Blackberry 7100g

I know the Blackberry vs. Treo topic pops up here fairly often, but I'm not finding much about the Blackberry 7100g. How do you like it? How does it compare to the Treo 650?

I will use the phone & e-mail functions primarily and am not sure that I need to pay more for the Treo because I don't really care about a camera, internet, etc.

Thoughts?

No mp3 or camera like the Treo, but my 7100g works great. I type faster than the old BB because of the typing software and the spaces between the keys makes it easier to use than the 7100t. The only complaint I have is that the old familar blackberry icons are gone and I know that th e 7100t uses them still.

7100t and 7100g are the same as far as I tell in functioality, its just a new shape and keyboard layout as noted above. I have a 7100t and my engineer has a Treo. for work ny BB trumps the Treo. for fun? well I prefer a real camera (read 5 megapixels) and my iPod over all in one. but thats just me.

I have a 7100 t, not a 'g' so I'm not sure the exact differences but it sounds like you are considering getting it for the same reasons I got mine. For those functions I have been happy with it. My main goal was to be able to answer my clients in a timely manner, which it allows me to do. I was hoping to be able to use it to do MLS (real estate) searches from the field as well but the way the MLS system is set up I can't actually make selections of criteria, so that was kind of a disappointment, but not Blackberry's fault. I'll just have to stick to laptop wireless on that. Typing on it becomes fairly easy after getting used to it, but, as someone mentioned, the keys are kind of congested so sometimes my thumb overlaps the button and I hit a wrong button.

Man, this was supposed to be a recommendation but I don't think I did a good job with it. Let me try this again - for your purposes, which sounded similar to mine, I think it will work for you.

Brink.

I had the Treo 650 and returned it after 10 days. I have the 7100g and I love it. Typing on it is much easier than old Blackberries after you get used to the smartkey stuff. Just 10 minutes or so of practice typing and I was used to it. Bigger buttons. It's light, fits in your pocket and is not like putting a shoe to your ear while on the phone. The Bluetooth works much easier than with Treo too. I can't say enough good about the 7100g.

For some reason I'm afraid the e-mail is not going to work the way I want it to. I want to be able to get my work/home e-mail on the Blackberry and be able to completely delete e-mails from the Blackberry, without again having to delete them from my work/home computer. Also, I want messages sent from the Blackberry to show up in the Sent folder in my work e-mail. Is this how it works?

I'll probably just get the damn thing and take it back if it won't do these things. Sounds like it will be a pain in the *** trying to set the thing up and figure out how everything works. Better get the IT guys involved.

Just set up your Outlook email or whatever it is to NOT leave mail on the server and it will be deleted when you delete it from the BB. There is a way to have sent items from the BB filed in your Outlook Sent Items.

TH: does that only apply to use with the BB enterprise email? I don't think he can do that w/ POP maiil and outlook, I know it can be done w/ BB Enterprise and Exchanege

That is what I am wondering. I do not have BES (I have POP e-mail & use Outlook) and am afraid I will be unable to do what TT is talking about without BES. Surely someone has been through this drill.

Help!

hobbs,

I do this for my job and what you are looking to do is only available through the BES server. If you are using a POP format to get your email to the BB then you will have to delete it twice. In my opinion, a small price to pay for the benefit.

I wish I had a company name to give you right now but I have a meeting set up with a 3rd party vendor next week that will answer this question...

If you don't mind paying another monthly fee, there are companies out there that host their own BES servers and will allow you to essentially piggy-back on them for somewhere in the range of (I believe) $30/mo. or so.

I'll either post here or try to remember to PM you when I learn more, but this is obviously a growing market and I'm sure you could get this with pretty minimal research as well.

And, by the way, go with a 7100t

CaptainEd:

Thanks alot for the info and I look forward to hearing what you find out about the 3rd-party BES scenario.

Also, I don't think I can get a 7100t with Cingular. Is there much difference between the 7100g & 7100t?

Thanks again.
