Black Gold

I'm watching it. It's a good show.

They are breaking every OSHA rule in the book (or so it seems), but it makes for good TV.

I'll keep watching.

I want to know if Peanut is going to make it all the way to the end.

It's a little over dramatized Not real bad.

Not too many rigs throw the chain on connections anymore. And Big Dog is where you go to work when you've been run off everywhere else. Don't know anything about the other two rigs.

It's alright to kick the slips if you ask me but drill should kick out those ******* pumps. He's on the TV cum'on.

Gerald used to work for my grandpa I believe. Seen Wayne lurking around The Bar, Midland Tx, USA. Stud.

Wife is handing out 11k gross per mo. No takers so far. No ****.

The show is pure crap. There's not a rig on the planet run like any of these rigs. The entire premise is stupid too. I guess the pay zone is suppose to be at the exact same depth for all of the rigs, that makes plenty of sense.

Caught the marathon of episodes this weekend. I think the show is great. They should explain more about the different layers of the industry: wildcat exploration (Midland financiers), rig operators (drillers), and the tool manufacturers (service industry).

I liked the segment when Mike LaMonica is hunting doves with the pipe sales rep. Awesome!

the pipe salesman, otherwise known as Rooster McConaughey..... Matt's older brother......

Its entertaining as hell, and Wayne is a freaking character- reminds me of my late Uncle so much. He was an East Texas hick (yes i realize its WEST texas)- but the thick accent is pretty close.

Yeah not quite sure why 10,000 feet exactly is the pay zone, that doesnt exactly make a whole lot of sense

I assume 10K feet is the "pay zone" determined by the seismic & engineering reports. Basically, they're poking 9 holes on this parcel of land, each to 10,000 feet to strike a pocket they've identified on a report.

there are plenty of rigs in West Texas like that, and most of 'em still use a spinning chain. the guy chunking chain should be runoff ("runt off") for not placing his free hand up against the chain after he threw it to keep from hitting li'l Peanut upside his hard hat. I had to laff when the announcer guy says "A near tragedy on one of the rigs" after that, and also how he says things like "The Viking only put 2 pieces of pipe in the ground all day." No one out there really talks like that.

Watching the derrickman (with a camera mounted somewhere on him) push those stands of drill pipe into the elevators, getting muddy, and working their asses off brought back a lot of memories, most of them good. When you're young and full of piss and vinegar, roughnecking is a helluva lot of fun.

I roughnecked in the 70's and 80's, and I highly doubt many rigs use a spinning chain anymore. Seems the last few oil conventions I've been to the last few years have most rigs with power tongs. Damn I miss those days. I know this show has to have the drama like the crabbing shows, but it makes for good entertainment for an old hand like me.

[ahem] I repeat...many rigs in West (and Central) Texas still use a spinning chain.

few of these small drilling contractors use power tongs, power slips, or computer-controlled mud systems.

I agree, I watch this show and it brings so many memories back. I moved to Houston when I was 17 just to find an off-shore rig to work. It took a year to get hired on, and it took only a year for me to realize I was not cut out for it. But damn, I lived like a king for a while. Life was good for a young buck with money living in Houston in the mid 70's.
