Black and white cop cars in Austin??

What's the deal with these?? I saw them a few months ago. They're plain, with "POLICE" written on the side and a shield, but that's basically it. Not at all like the blue and white APD cars. So here I am thinking they're Barton Creek Mall security. WTF? Should I stop when they try to pull me over for doing 85 down Mopac??

After you are stopped and refuse to take a breathalyzer, you should also be prepared to give them an unauthorized blood test.

It is part of the revamping that Chief Art Acevedo is doing. I personally like the new look and low profile nature of the cars. They look more badass, imho. Also, they very much look like old school LA Police cars, think Adam 12 and such. Chief Acevedo comes from CHP so that may have something to do with the look.

They have funds that don't affect the tax base otherwise he would not have done it. There are a few other tweaks being done as well. I only know this because I read an article about it and I liked the look.

They are slowly phasing the new look in as funds allow or dictate. I think they total phase in is set for sometime late next year.

I live out on 620, so I see APD, Williamson Co, Travis Co, Lakeway PD and the DPS all on the same ten mile stretch of road. So my first impression was that we had yet another law enformcement agency that had some form of jurisdiction. I like the new cars.

They are saving thousands of dollars by changing the design on the cars. They're also saving money by eliminating the stripe down the side of the officers' uniform pants. It's kinda cool.... it's nice to see a public agency taking steps to cut the budget.

This is Austin PO-lice. They won't cramp a brotha's style, they will shoot a brotha dead. They have a lot to do with their image that goes beyond changing cars but it's a start.

I do think Acevedo is the right guy and I have faith in him to do the right things and take the right steps. Time will tell.

All the cops I work with hate the black and whites for reasons already mentioned. A few citizens don't feel like they need to stop when being pulled over. Sometimes they think it's a state trooper and ask an officer what they're doing in town.

And for those of you who see the black and white hummer don't go ape. It was seized from drug dealers and repainted for PR purposes. It spends most of the time sitting in the garage under headquarters and is barely driven.

The new uni's are cool. The new badges are atrocious. Too gaudy. Look like a country western belt buckle.

Chief is the real deal. Having met him a few times he's a genuine guy. He fights real hard to get us the funds we need, and is hell bent on changing the public perception of the department.

He sticks up for the officers, but he's also very hard on them. Not all his changes have been very popular with some of the veteran detectives/officers, and that can only be a good thing.

However, i would guesstimate that he has a 70-75% approval rating with the cops and that's nothing to sneeze at.

They are a lot better than all the white Fords with blacked out windows they are driving around in, and the green Mustangs unmarked except some similar colored graphic treatments. How are we supposed to know these aren't some goobers who bought a flashing light at an Oklahoma truck stop and stuck it on the dash of their car? Why should I pull over for them?

If you ever have concerns about being pulled over by any vehicle...marked or unmarked, pull in to the closest gas station or corner store that is open for business, and if this doesn't work call 911 and ask for verification that you are being pulled over by a legitimate police officer.

You should be able to tell by the lights if it's a legit officer... only the cops have blue and red. I didn't think you could even go buy a blue and red light.

I had to go Google the original car because, even though I live in Austin, I couldn't tell you what the patrol cars looked like.

The new look is fine.

I'm glad they changed the 'Police' font on the side, though I still wish it was larger. It was originally a Times like font and it was very hard to read from even a short distance.

Saw one today all black with matte black lettering. At first I thought it was an old car sold at auction, but a closer look showed that the matte black was intentional and not just faded paint. It was rather cool looking.

And yes, anybody can by red and blue lights:The Link

After the aggy game, the daughter and I were driving down Barton Springs Road & saw a black & white crashed up on the curb by Threadgill's. There were flares all over the intersection & we started looking for movie cameras...thought a scene was being shot there with fake cop cars.

Thanks for the explanation to us former Austinites...
