Bird flew in my vent!!!

I was out in the yard and just happened to see a bird fly in a vent on the side of my house. It has a cover on it, but the little bastard must be opening it with it's beak. I have been hearing some noises coming from the bathroom that is downstairs, kinda under where this vent is located. I just thought the pipes were making some funny noises, cause it sounds like the noises are coming from inside the toilet. I'm a relatively new homeowner, and I have no idea what this vent is for or where it goes. I know that it's not the dryer vent, because it's on the bottom. I can replace the cover so that it cant get in, but I don't want to trap it in there, that could make my house smell. Here are some pics of said vent, any idea where this could lead, and what I could do to remedy this situation?

Probably an opportunistic house sparrow, and it is probably building a nest in there. They commonly nest in between the slats of attic vents. There are vents from the plumbing pipes and from the ventilation fan in the bathroom. I guess you could put some screen wire over the opening so the bird could not return.
There probably won't be any problem with the nest plugging up the pipe, other than sewage backing up into your den one day while you are at work.

I will guess that somewhere within 10' or so of this wall you have a downstairs bathroom, maybe a half bath?

If so, this is the 'fart fan' exhaust port. Test it by running the fan & having someone sit outside to see if the flap pops a little bit (or a bird comes flying out).

If nothing on this test & you have a dryer somewhat close to this area, run it for a moment to see if the flap pops (or bird ejects).

No good? Then try the kitchen exhaust vent for over the stove (again, one sitting, other waiting).

& Then use a coathanger to pull the debris out that said bird has made a nest with. If they laid eggs, have a small (really small) scrambled egg breakfast.

Secure over with mesh or a screen of some sort; thin (but long enough to do the job) screws aren't a bad idea, but you want to prevent the flap from sticking out enough for another bird (or the same one) to open the flap. Sometimes, a solidly hot glued pair of magnets will do the trick.

Rox - I think you're right, it's the vent for the half bath fart fan, my friend thought the same thing when I told him about it. I'm gonna do the test when my wife gets home. Thanks for the help from all of y'all.

And yes, that birdfeeder is in a stupid place. The previous home owner built it as a combo garden hose holder/bird feeder.

Ya, that's what it is, but the bird didn't fly out. So I guess it's not in there right now, or the fan isn't bothering it. I'm gonna have to borrow or buy a ladder, because I don't have one that tall. I sure as **** hope it doesn't fly out on me when I'm messing around up there on the ladder.

Several years ago I found a mummified sparrow in the flexible exhaust pipe between my dryer & the laundry room wall.
Have also seen sparrows flying in a neighbor's exhaust vent just like yours. In fact, if you live on Martha's Drive the Meadows of Brushy Creek, it is yours. Are you the guy whose back fence is falling down, and is just being held up by a tree?

Luke Duke, I was about to recommend the same thing. I had this problem and solved it with the very same item. I got mine at Home Depot or Lowes. Just make sure the sparrow and nest get removed before installation.

This type of thing happens a lot in apartments. In two separate apartments I have lived in, a bird has flown in the dryer exhuast vent and gotten killed. One time, I my roommate and I were gone for the whole weekend and left the AC way up so it wouldn't come on while we were gone.

I got back and let me tell you, that smell was something else. I think we had been noticing some noises and maybe a hint of smell everyonce in a while, but we figured later that it must have only come only when we ran the dryer. So, we kept frying that bird every time we dried our clothes. Freaking terrible.

Some f'in birds decided to have a bunch of kids in my damn fart vent. Some of the babies died. One of them was near death (I ended up euthanizing him b/c he was so malnourished...). Eggs everywhere. I nearly passed out from the smell.

Leaf blower from inside house stopped shooting debris outside the house, so I installed some chicken wire outside. Low and behold I get a CD/mirror to examine the ducts from the inside and there's still some nest material! And it still smells like STRAIGHT ***. Took three hours to do this ****, and will probably take another three hours tomorrow.

F'N BIRDS.

Harbor Freight Tools sells a duct cleaning brush kit for less than $ 7.00... wire goes in from the house side, pulls from the exterior.

Should get you cleaned right up.

You could consider installing some screen wire over the vent opening. Form it to fit the opening, bend about 1/2 inch at a right angle, then glue it in place to cover the entrance.
You might make sure the birds are out of there first, though.

We were out birdwatching a few weeks ago and saw a bird go into a vent, and the design of the house looked just like your photo. My wife said, "Should we knock on the door and tell the homeowner?" I said, "Nah, they'll figure it out soon enough."

Had a bird in our dryer vent when we moved in. The dryer would not put out heat at all and it was because the bird had blocked the entire passage with his nest, which can burn out your dryer.

You need to get rid of the bird and reinforce the hole or your fart's or gonna be backing up on u
