been trying to use the new microsoft search engine, Bing, just to try something new. it's definitely clean and user friendly.
anyway, just a search engine from what i can tell but still pretty cool to see someone trying to give google a run for their money.

they probably will, but it was designed for the sole purpose of competing head to head with google. i read something about google taking the challenge very seriously. could make for some exciting innovation.

By far, the coolest part of Bing is when you do a search for flights and it tells you (with good, but not perfect) accuracy whether you should wait before buying the tickets in order to get a better deal.

It does something similar with hotels, but haven't looked much at it.

I'm not suggesting that Microsoft will fail with Bing. They may do very well, I don't know nor do I care. But I think for years now Microsoft has been struggling with an identity crisis -- they don't know what they want to be. Packaged software, music, hardware/devices, search, etc. What are they? If the answer is "all of those things" then their demise is a fait accompli.

The technology world has been changing so quickly in recent years, and they know that their model of selling software (which has been such a cash cow and growth driver) is changing dramatically. They just seem to be all over the place with no clear strategy that I can discern, and I think this is a direct reflection of their leadership. Ballmer is in way over his head. He may be smart, but he is not an ideas guy.

You're correct, of course -- lots of companies have successfully diversified into other businesses. I'm thinking of Microsoft as passing from one phase into another now. Where they once were the 800 pound gorilla who created markets and dominated them, I see them now as moving into a phase where they are just another player, rather than a leader.

Open source software is the horrifying monster lurking in Microsoft's closet. Intel and AMD are behind it now, which is the big change that was coming. Unlike MS, they don't have to worry about copy protection because you can't duplicate their best product for a grand total of $0.03. As hardware becomes more powerful, it requires better software to drive hardware purchases. The software industry really fell flat on that, and as a result the hardware vendors are rising up to fill the void.

Right now I'm refusing to look at it because those commercials they run to advertise it may be the most annoying commercials ever made.

They are way worse then kimber lee lynn the yodeling used car niece, and that's saying something.
