I know there was a favorite journalists on this board a month ago. Add Bill Raftery to my list...almost forgot I enjoyed listening to him.

I have to say I wish he was doing the Final Four instead of Billy Packer.

Have to disagree with you on the this one Husker, Rafferty tries to mock Dicky V too much! Tickle the twine and the sudden bursts to me a real turn off. I like Packer. I think the man may be the most knowledgeable annoucer in college BB. He may not be exciting to listen to as some of the others, but he really sees and knows what is going on in games even to the point he notices a team is winded and needs a timeout. Sometimes he says I don't know how much longer they can leave so and so on the bench and almost on prompt a coach will within a few seconds send a man player back in. He is just a real pro. I will give you he does put the dramatics in it like Dicky V, baby, but I can do with out that anyway. I guess it is indivdual preference whatever a person likes.
 
Raftery had one embarrassing moment today.

Kentucky got the ball late in the second half and two players ran past midcourt with the ball as Raftery shouted, "They've got numbers!" As the camera kept moving toward the free throw line, you could see 4 Tennessee players were back on defense.
 
Packer's most annoying trait is when he immediately provides his opinion on a call, then even if the replay shows him to be incorrect, he'll say that the replay confirms his opinion. He does this regularly, and it absolutely drives me crazy.

Other than that, he's OK with me, and much much much preferred to Vitale. Packer's also better without Jim Nance.

I like Raftery, though. Raftery and Sean McDonough are great together.
 
On what basis due you base that deduction? CBS has probably had him calling the finals for at least 15 years. I don't believe you keep that seat by being dumb.
 
To be honest, up until this year Rafferty has been fine with me, but his going out of the way for his "pet statements" has gotten stale, but, I have to admit, this could be the crotchety old man in me coming out.

I really do, he doesn't have a forced "schtick" and doesn't come across as an pompous, angry old man.

I find myself seeing things in the game that he points out that I never would have before.
 
Packer made a comment during the UCLA/Arizona game about Budinger averaging 17 points per game for the Wildcats. He said that if Chase was going to average 17 points per game, he needed to "get 17 each game...and then some." I guess Billy doesn't understand how averages work?
 
Count me in as Raftery >>>>> Packer. Packer is the worst headline color guy in American Sports.

I cannot stand Raftery.
He sounds like he has not taken a dump in 6 months.

I would rather listen to 10 Dickie V's call a game at the same time than Raftery. He is horrible.
 
I'm not sure who I like anymore. I used to like Raftery, but I think he's getting a little long in the tooth. Packer is useless as a commentator. Up until this year, I thought Ron Franklin did a good job, but he's getting old, too because he misspeaks alot more than he used to.
