Bill Hicks' mom on Letterman..

Tonight (Friday), David Letterman had Mary Hicks on his show. Turns out, she is Bill HIcks' mom.

In Oct of 93 (Bill died in Feb of 94 of pancreatic cancer), Bill came on the Letterman show, but Letterman pulled his appearance after it was taped.

It was never shown, and never fully explained why they pulled the appearance other than to say that Letterman wasn't "happy" with it.

Of course, Bill took it very seriously, and had a lot to say about Letterman shortly thereafter.

Well, tonight, Letterman had Bill's mother on, and Letterman apologized to her, and then showed the tape of the appearance.

It was a normal Bill Hicks stand up. He did his bit about Easter, his bit about teaching kids homosexual lifestyles in school, and his bit about getting a new tv show about hunting and killing Billy Ray Cyrus, as well as a couple others.

I still have no idea why it was pulled, and Letterman didn't really explain why, but my question is, why do this now? It's not like Bill just died, and it's not like it's the anniversary of his death.

It's just weird, imo. I wonder if it's something they had been planning for some time, but was only able to do it now, or something like that.

Anyone here know why it was just done now?

I always heard it was comments on Jesus and abortion. I didn't watch the show tonight so not sure if he talked about that or not. It's pretty close to a 15 year anniversary as for timing.

Ha, I could see why it got dropped. Let's see, the topics are killing people Dave had as guests, homosexuality, abortion, smoking, Easter, and Jesus (though he didn't deliver the line about walking up to Jackie Kennedy with a rifle pin on -- "Just thinking of Jack, Mrs. Kennedy, just thinking of Jack.")

He may have been better off with his routine where he's walking in NYC and a drug dealer yells to the guy in front of him "Heroin! Heroin!" but looks at Bill and yells "Glue!" "Hey, ******, I got money too! I'm going to show you the balance on my ATM slip, then buy heroin from that little kid across the street!"

What's amazing is that his "Step on the Gas" routine about the LA riots is still hilarious; it doesn't sound dated at all.

I still find it amazing that I lucked into seeing him at the Laff Stop back in like '92....

Good stuff.. The crowd really like it. It's not like people were groaning or the audience turned on him.

Letterman seemed a little choked up there right when they came back from the clip.

Bill's mom was pretty funny. No nonsense.

Yeah, Mrs. Hicks was awesome

This was my wife's first time to see his standup (I'd played for her a couple of his CDs before) and she was laughing her *** off the entire set.

Scary thought about Hicks wanting to go to aggy before getting into comedy...

Letterman's turning into an old softy. Awesome quote from him after they watched the clip: "Keeping that off the show probably says more about me than it says about him."

I too saw Hicks at the Laff Stop in '92... my girlfriend at the time was crazy about him.

Letterman is getting more and more classy as he ages.

I knew Bill as far back as Junior High School.
He was the absolute funniest person I have EVER met, even the.
i recall he had a running buddy, and they were simply the madmen duo. Tall, slim guy. Can't recall his name. Wasn't as 'dark' as Bill and didn't have a comedy career.
Great memories.
