Biggest win in Ten Years???

Postgame sure sounded like Oren said biggest win in ten years, couldnt tell if he said regular season, on the road, or just meant in general.

If he meant overall, he is correct that our biggest win in the last ten years was against MSU but with all due respect it was the Regional Final win in 2003 over MSU which has to rate as the biggest win of the Rick Barnes era at Texas.

Just for giggles my top five wins of Barnes era (all btw are in tourney as those wins always outrate regular season wins):

1. 2003 over MSU in Regional Finals
2. 2004 over UNC in NCAA Second Round
3. 2006 over WVU in Sweet 16
4. 2008 over Stanford in Sweet 16
5. 2002 over Miss St in second round

What? Nonsense.

I guess the radio guys have to scrounge for topics just like the talking heads on TV because tonight's win shouldn't even rank among the top 30 wins of the past 10 years.

****, off the top of my head, Texas beating #1 UCLA, in LA, back in 2007 was a much bigger win. Showed that we could play with the big boys, and, IIRC, it was texas' first win over a top ranked team on the road in school history.

that one. I still have the sports clippings from the daily texan after the victory, it shows all 5 starters on the court as the buzzer sounded screaming at the top of their lungs like they couldn't believe it. Great moment in UT basketball history.

Absolutely the biggest win in Texas history was the 88-85 win in Norman in 2003. It got us the #1 seed at the SA regional which paved the way for our first Final Four in 50+ years.

Not saying they are not a good team and this is a Great win for Texas, if Texas keeps improving no reason they cannot make Sweet 16 at least, they have a good chance this year. Michigan State is 8 - 4 and have only beat one ranked team. I don't want to take away from Texas victory though and I am very impressed by the Thompson and Joseph, they will keep getting better. Big 12 is tough but I like Texas chances.

Let's not forget that these announcers are caught up in the moment just like fandom is, and it's all relative to the moment. For a 70-year old fan to say a game is the best he's ever seen surely carries more weight than the same from someone who is 20.

bona_horn I was thinking the same thing as you. If you restrict it to regular season, our 2003 win @ Oklahoma is probably #1 of the past decade.

To add to gem's list:

I recall watching a big win over a top ten Memphis team in Vegas a day before driving to Pasadena in 2006 for the Rose Bowl and if I am not mistaken that same year we beat a top ten Villanova team at home. Both of those teams were number one seeds in the tourney that year.

Today's result against Kansas is definitely one I would add to the "top wins of the past 10 years" list.

For me, whether at The Drum or The Phog, beating KU is just as big as a tournament win. It's a good feeling.

Subject of another post is whether today's win over Kansas in Lawrence is biggest regular season win of Barnes era and there is a strong argument though I lean to the 2003 win in Norman that clinched a one seed. Today is definitely in top 2 or 3 regular season wins though.

I guess the thing that makes this win so awesome is that it wasn't just against the #2 undefeated team in the nation. It wasn't just snapping a 69-game winning streak. It wasn't just for control of the Big XII.

It's that it was against KANSAS. They've been the biggest thorn in Texas' side for many years. I think that, if Texas were in another conference, say the SEC, we would have ruled the conference in basketball recently. But we happen to play in a conference with one of the biggest perennial basketball powers of all time.

I saw a couple of articles earlier this year about how KU-Texas is emerging as the premiere basketball rivalry in the Big XII, and I'd like to think it could be. But I maintained that it wasn't much of a rivalry until we started topping them, especially in Lawrence.

This is a great start. Hopefully the Big XII sticks around for a while longer, because I really enjoy watching Texas play Kansas.

I don't think there's a way to tell right now. The 2003 win in Norman is the biggest regular season win of the last decade because of what it did for the team. If this win propels the team to the Big XII title and a 1 or 2 seed, then this was huge. If they collapse down the stretch though it won't mean very much.

I'd throw in the 2003 win over OU in Austin as a huge one too. We'd lost 8 straight to OU and they were #4 in the country. That win began OU's downfall.

To beat unbeaten Kansas at Phog Allen and spoil their undefeated season and stop their 69 game unbeaten home streak. And to do it with that terrible start. Well, it just doesn't get any bigger than that.

I wonder how many people who posted here in the past couple of days read the first dozen or so posts on the topic?
