Big Texan Steak Ranch 72oz Steak Challenge

I'm guessing you recommend ordering your steak medium well, and take your time at the beginning. I would think eating all of the steak first would get you pretty close?

Ate there in 1999 on my way to Dallas from California. Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, and Perry Saturn walked in as I was leaving. That is all.

Ditto to Davids Steak and Seafood! That guy has been in the food business up in Amarillo for a really long time. It was called the Seafood Galley before being converted to Davids. The food is really good. He also had a build your own burger place called Buns over Texas that was good as well.

David's is supposed to be pretty good and I really like La Brisas for steak

Other good restaurants in Amarillo - Blue Sky and My Thai

Also of note, several restaurants in Amarillo, are closed Monday nights

Thanks for the information. I've been checking these places out on the internet. Thursday dinner is going to be nice.

I remember people in the area telling me that the Big Texan was popular with the football teams in town to play West Texas A&M (West Texas State at the time). Linemen liked to take the 72 oz. challenge. I hope it wasn't a pre-game meal.

I see I'm too late to be of assistance here.

Contrary to another poster's observation, The Big Texan is terrible. It's a tourist trap, a novelty stop, a dining gimmick. Few locals are regulars. If the place had to rely on the quality of its food rather than the incredible marketing genius of the 72-ouncer and kitsch cowboy atmosphere, it would've gone out of business decades ago.

If you want a good meal, go somewhere else. If you want a fun time that you won't forget but will almost certainly set you back three-quarters of a hundred dollars, plus tip, then knock yourself out at The Big Texan.

As for that monolithic sirloin: believe it or not, Andre the Giant ate two. I **** you not.
