Big Texan Steak Ranch 72oz Steak Challenge

I haven't been there in about 20 years, but they used to have a scoreboard showing the number who attempted and succeeded by gender. A whole lot more guys tried, but a higher percentage of girls succeeded.

Family friends of ours back in San Antonio had moved there from South Dakota. Their daughter was a smoking hot model for local clothing stores. We went to a Pizza Hut buffet one day, and she out-ate all of us. We tried to keep up, and even though I could really pack it away, I was no match.

I was still an ignorant teenager at the time, so I have no idea if she excused herself to purge.

Damn this makes me hungry, but I have to agree - a 72oz. steak can't be all that great. I think I would rather enjoy myself with a nice, medium rare 16oz. ribeye, grilled potatoes, asparagus, and a Caesar salad. I can't imagine how bad you would feel after a 72oz. steak and sides. Oof!

Once you're conscious again, I hope you post how you did. I was unable to watch on the webcam.

I hope you were successful and that you did not die trying!

Two words: Epic fail. In the end, I ate all of the sides (shrimp, salad, baked potato, dinner roll) and about 3 pounds of the steak. My moral victory was beating the other two that tried it with me.

Here were my mistakes:

1. Drinking the night before
2. Drinking on the road on the way there
3. Going too fast out of the gate
4. Drinking too much water during the hour
5. I decided to go with ordering the 72 ouncer medium. The problem is- the steak is so big, the middle is cold and blood red.

Y'all remember the original 7 deadly sins?

Gluttony was one of them.

So why are we glorifying it?

Just a rhetorical question. No reason to answer it or get your hackles raised. Well, maybe raised a little.

Is the food any good there? I saw the complaint about the chicken fried steak.

I got a wild hair and am going to drive up to Laramie for the game. I'll likely pass through Amarillo around dinner time. Oh, I'm not interested in trying the steak challenge.

Is their steak any good?

I have never been to the Big Texan but can recommended several other very very good steak places in Amarillo

The Big Texan is actually pretty good. It seems like nothing but a tourist trap but the food is good and the atmosphere is fun. Some other steakhouses you might try are "David's" and or the Country Barn.
