Some buddies and I are heading up to Amarillo in a few weeks to tackle this bad boy.
The Link

Has anyone attempted this? Any suggestions on what to do/not to do? I'm looking for strategies and training methods here.

The guy from Man v. Food on the Travel Channel was able to "meat" the challenge. I think he left the soft foods (roll, potato, etc) till last. There may be some video of it on the TC website, dunno.

Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

If it was just the 72 oz steak, I think there have been days I could have pulled it off. But you have to eat the entire meal which also consists of Shrimp cocktail, baked potato, salad & roll(s). Good luck!

I've been to the Big Texan 3 times. Seen the challenge attempted twice. One guy barely got 1/2 way through the steak. The other guy knocked it out in about 25 minutes.

It can be done. Be the ball, Danny...

lots of people have done it, i couldnt do it. i had a friend try once, an offensive lineman, he couldnt do it. you have to eat the whole thing, it is a sirloin, lots of fat and grisstle. you need to eat the steak first, the lighter food will go down easier at the end.

I've never tried the challenge, but the chicken fried steak I had in there was quite possibly the worst piece of **** I have ever tasted. I mean it had to have been frozen a year in advance.

Two points above are very true. Don't eat the fat and leave the softer foods till last. Put the steak down but at a steady pace. Going really fast out of the gun is a no-no. At least that is what a guy who has done it said when I was there. No way I would even try it but it is awesome when somebody does try it and you are there.

the guy on Man vs Food did it and did it fairly quickly, the lessons I learned are:

1) cut the fat and grizzle off first and get it approved that you didn't cut too much meat
2) eat the protein first, steak then shrimp and save all of the starches for the end (DO NOT TOUCH THE BREAD OR POTATO till everything else is gone)
3) you have to go at a good steady pace, once you slow down or stop your stomach will begin to fill full and you are done

Good luck and take some pictures to post afterwards

Speaking of Man v. Food.....did anyone catch the episode where he downed the inferno chicken wings at that place in San Jose, CA...? You could tell he was in some serious pain....he really wasn't able to joke about it, dude was suffering.

All excellent suggestions. Thanks everyone. I'm glad to hear that I don't have to eat the fat and gristle. I will definitely take pics and post them.

What about a pregame strategy? Starve myself for 24 hours before? Eat big meals the week leading up so to stretch out my stomach?

The bouncer at blue light in Lubbock did this feat recently. I haven't asked him how he did it, cause I don't want to puke up my beer.

I'm hooked on the live webcam. There's a guy, probably not much over a buck-fifty, making an attempt right now.

As I recall on Man v Food. About a quarter of the people who tried it, finished it. Which is pretty high compared to some of his other challenges.

I watched my buddy do it 19 years ago. His biggest advice was, as mentioned above, not to starve yourself before hand. Have plenty for breakfast and lunch. Some exercise helps a lot, particularly cardio.

It used to be $72.00, which you have to pay before you start. If you finish the whole meal in an hour, they reimburse you. This might have changed over the years...not sure.

Light fruit, and lots of exercise, weight lifting the day of is perfect advice.

Here is what I learned when spending lot of time in the Churrascarias of Brazil- to maximize your appetite. The slower, and more paced you can be the better. With only an hour to work on- go the slow, steady pace for the first 50 minutes, avoiding the sides as others have noted. The last 10 minutes is the time to scarf if you must. You're smart so I'm sure you'll figure out a pace that leaves no more than 20% left for those last 10 minutes. Pacing yourself is key- DO NOT go bananas right out of the gate or you'll be done after 15 minutes.

I like the weight lifting idea- that always leaves me starving. Max out at the gym if possible. So, you need to find a gym you can use now! Good luck- post some pics!

I tried it and failed but the guy next to me did it.

It costs $72 and you get a shirt and a cup out of the deal. You also get to keep your leftovers.

I don't know what to suggest. I quit after like 40 oz. and felt horrible.
