Big Screen Televisions

I have $1500 that I want to spend on a big screen. Which brand-type would you recommend? There is so much out there, I don't know where to start.

By big screen, I mean in the 50" range.

you may have to spend a little more than that. if i recall correctly, a good sony or toshiba 51" would go to 1499.99 when it was on sale, but if you shop around you should be able to find something that'll work out.

good brands: mitsubishi, hitachi, sony, toshiba. there are a lot of other good TVs out there, but these are the ones that have consistently been great products from my experience.

I bought my 57" Toshiba for less than $1500. As DLP/LCD/plasma prices come down, I would think it would only put further downward pressure on the big rear projection TV prices. $1500 is doable.

My impressions of "the big 5":

Mitsubishi -- the most "film-like". A bit soft.
Hitachi -- the "best". Sharp picture, lifelike colors.
Pioneer -- the "other best". Similar characteristics.
Toshiba -- a great compromise between the high end and budget TVs.
Sony -- too hypey in the color palette for my tastes, and too expensive.

Thanks fellas...I've narrowed my brands to the 4 listed by King Koopa...hopefully, i'll find a deal within the next couple of weeks.

Beware of Toshiba, I have had bad luck with their CRT sets, two of them died for no obvious reason about 3 years after I bought them.

....also at Frys you can haggle with them over price. Walk in there with 1500 cash and knowing what you want. A hungry salesman won't let you leave without the TV you want.

I don't know that falling DLP/LCD prices will really affect the rear projection prices much. It would seem that projection tvs would already be a pretty mature technology, at least at the 1080i level. Older technology DLP's/RP LCD's are available in the $2000ish ballpark, but still we have seen no tremendous drop in prices on the rear projection units.

just got the March consumer reports in the mail yesterday. the feature article: big screen tv's. lotsa good info there.

i just scanned the article, but one thing i did notice was they said crt-based projectors are expected to drop by as much as 1/3, while the microprojector types (lcd, dlp, lcos) could drop 10 - 15 %.
