Big East expanding

Invites 6 teams

Air Force, Navy, Boise St for football only.

SMU, Houston, Central Florida for all sports.

This has to be the stupidest idea ever. First how does this really strengthen your conference. Boist St. is the only school on that list that has many any noise in football in recent years. Second, this conference is so scattered now that teams are going to have to travel cross country to play conference games. That just doesn't make sense to me.

I don't think the Big East should still have an AQ and I have felt that way for a few years. Even with these additions I don't see how they can justify keeping that AQ.

I agree but the BEast is just trying to survive. They have to take what they can get at this point and are in a worse situation than the Big 12. With Pitt and Syracuse going to the ACC, WVU and TCU going to the Big 12 and UConn and Rutgers publicly saying they are looking at alternatives, all the Big East has left for football is Cincinnati, Louisville and South Florida. Adding the new 6 gets them to 9 at least depending on what happens with UConn and Rutgers. And of course, there were rumors that Louisville might be the 10th Big 12 team before WVU was announced. 9 teams is not a minimum number for BCS AQ status. The Big East looks safe from an AQ standpoint based on the BCS contract unless there are some disqualification rules that are not posted on the website.

Here is the BCS Standards for AQ website (near bottom):

It looks like the Big East has the AQ through the 2013-2014 season. I didn't see any reference to a means of disqualifying an AQ conference.

Well, there you have it. An article about conference realignment that did not mention the LHN.
