Big Day for UNC

UNC signed Diamond DeShields (Hoopgurlz #3) today. They also got committments from two other top 20 recruits, Stephanie Muvunga and Jessica Washington. This now gives them committments from the no. 3, 15, 18, 27 and 54 ranked recruits for 2013. And apparently they are also finalists for the #'s 5 and 8 ranked recruits, and are on #1 Russel's list as well. A lot of the credit for the impressive haul is being given to Imani's aunt, Trica Stafford Odum:

wow, UNC! thought for sure that she would go to UConn or Tenn. That's an impressive class if all sign this fall. Especially so if they add Russell.

Hoopgurlz shows North Carolina with 7 verbals for 2013. For all of them to be able to sign, a lot of current players will have to either leave the team or become non-scholarship players.

It appears to me that UNC loses 3 seniors this season and then will have 4 seniors for the 2012-13 season. That's 7 scholarships open by the time that the 7 verbals in 2013 class are on campus.

And why havent we made Stafford-Odum the highest paid assistant in the nation and brought her to Texas yet? If they get Russell too I think this will be as good of a class as I can remeber ever being signed. And it may very well get Silvia Hatchel some much needed breathing room.

And Forthan would likely not transfer here, we are very deep at her position and playing time right away would be more likely if she went to Baylor. Should could come here and compete to play right away and possibly move to the wing position, but I've always gotten the impression that she wasnt wanting to have to compete for minutes and thats why she passed on A&M the first time around.

NC has 2 players from 2010 (one of whom has taken a redshirt year effectively putting that player in the class of 2011), they signed 4 more players in 2011, 5 more in 2012 (apparently one of their six 2012 commits did not sign), and they have 7 commits and counting for 2013.

2 + 4 + 5 + 7 = 18

They also have 1 commit and counting for 2014.

I was looking at a few of Stafford-Odom's online bios and it seems she has worked her recruiting magic at three different programs. She brought in a top three class at UCLA, and then back-to-back top five classes, inc the #1 class in 2010, while at Duke. And now it looks as if her first class at UNC is going to be ranked first as well; pretty impressive when you consider the Tar Heels didn't even make the NCAA tourney this year. Her UNC bio lists her as an asst but you would think this is someone who certainly ought to be an assoc, or even co-HC. Otherwise, with her track record, you'd have to assume she's going to be running her own program somewhere in the not too distant future.

IIRC, a lot of the negative about GG was that what flies on the East Coast doesn't necessarily fly in Texas. What are the guarantees that S-O could have the same success here?

After the Goestenkors era, it's apparently obvious it's all about the "fit". Just because you are a superstar elsewhere doesn't mean you'll be a superstar at Texas.
