Yeah, I'm calling ******** on that. If it was loose during the race, then it was loose ("or incorrectly reset") when the race was over. The loose shoe would have been announced that night, or the next day when all the speculation as to why he sucked so bad was going on. This is a convenient excuse, and a photoshop.

having owned horses, including a thoroughbred, I cannot imagine that a shoe sprung/came loose and somebody didn't detect it immediately.

The pictures are real and there are links that show where Big Brown jumped to the right out of the gate into the path of Quadalcanal. Quadalcanal then steps in his back leg dislodging the shoe.

Big Brown reset the shoe when he was walking after the race. Why would they photoshop that? Furthermore, it is a legitimate reason for such a performance. Anyone who had watched this horse knows something was wrong.

I'd say Belmont had an interest in Big Brown winning. A triple crown winner would put horse racing in the spotlight and would get people out to the track on days when its not a big race.
