Big #95

Saw lots of others asking the same question with no insight. Only speculation is the position switch moving to the edge may have shuffled him in the order.

The depth chart showed Collins ahead of Bush yet Collins didnt play best I could tell and Bush played a ton. I thought maybe Collins was out due to Covid but I saw him dressed out on the sideline.

Neither Collins or Broughton played. A bit surprising. I'm not convinced Collins is better at DE. I'd like to see his quickness inside.

Also surprised Jerrin Thompson didn't play the way he came on at the end of last year.

I rewatched the game and Broughton did get quite a bit of playing time which makes Collins not playing even more surprising. Like you I would rather see Collins inside. That being said, its one game and there will be personnel changes throughout the season. The coaches see these guys everyday and probably know best. Hopefully Collins was held out for a precautionary reason and they will unleash the kraken this weekend. If he doesnt play next weekend someone needs to be fired :smile1:

True, but I was incorrect because the original participation was incorrect on Broughton and Thompson. Thought it would be weird for all of them not playing listed as 2nd string. Still dumbfounded on Collins.

I agree on wanting to see Collins and see him inside....but hey Coach K gets that fat check for good reason.
Of course...Jacoby has earned his spot it seems...but..
Don't think many were too impressed with our penetration so we may see him in a much larger role this week

Maybe convert him to TE this year if we have one more injury at that position.

I saw some comments on twitter that surprised me. I’ll just say it wasn't injury related and we should see Collins on the field this week. I would love to see the DL wreaking havoc in the backfield this weekend. :hookem:

The kid appeared to be a special talent. I hope that whatever issue there is can be resolved. I remember Ash being credited during the Alamo Bowl broadcast as having said that Collins appeared to have more talent — at this stage in his career — than one Chase Young.

That Murphy kid, though more of an inside guy, looked like he had some spark. Lightening quick with power.

I presumed it was covid without knowing any thing else. But it could have been anything really.

Collins is still listed as #95 listed on the team roster at the JACK position. That doesn't mean he hasn't messed up and Sark wants him to get his mind right before playing.

First question from a reporter during Sark’s media availability was about Collins. His comment was interesting and something along the lines of playing time is earned. Video: Steve Sarkisian media availability - University of Texas Athletics

I'll take a wild stab at this and guess Alfred's emergence late last year led him to assume his spot in the starting role and Sark thinks he can and wants to get more out of him. Also, may be related to preferred position/position change.
Pure speculation but, if true, another indication we now have a real football coach.
And as for Collins..I suspect we will see him soon and he will play like he has something to prove and make all of us, and Coach Sark, pleased. Dude has legit NFL potential.

Shaun Rogers had some similar development "mishaps" from 1997-98 that cost him some playing time. He was clearly the most talented defender on the team not named Hampton, yet was embroiled in position battles with the likes of Ced Woodard and Maurice Gordon. The fact that Rogers probably should have been drafted like 40 spots earlier also showed how scouts viewed his time at Texas.

I think Collins has a good head on his shoulders and needs to perform in practice to get back to "split" playing time at the other DT position. Not sure if Broughton is really all that (I thought he was coming out of HS), but if Collins can't beat him to get less than 1/3 of the snaps at that position, then maybe Jack is his best fit as a body.

I thought Broughton looked good against ULaLa. Quick off the ball, good push, good motor and athletic. I look forward to seeing both he and Collins in the line up.
