Horns will look to start off the home Big 12 schedule on a winning note when they host Kansas State this Sunday at 2 PM. KSU has won the last two games between the two after Texas took the first game they played last season. The series is tied at 13 wins apiece. One of these two will get their first Big 12 win of this season as both dropped their first league game on Thursday.[pre]
KANSAS STATE PROBABLE STARTERS

No. Player Ht. Pos. Yr.
1 Haley Texada 5-7 G Jr.
4 Katya Leick 6-1 F Sr.
10 Leticia Romero 5-8 G Fr.
21 Ashlynn Knoll 5-11 F Sr.
23 Ashia Woods 5-11 G Jr.

TEXAS PROBABLE STARTERS

No. Player Ht. Pos. Yr.
1 Empress Davenport 5-7 G So.
2 Celina Rodrigo 5-8 G So.
3 Nneka Enemkpali 6-1 F Jr.
32 Brady Sanders 5-11 G So.
40 Kelsey Lang 6-5 C Fr. [/pre]

Horns will have a height advantage inside. It was a weak point for the Wildcats in their game against Baylor. The Wildcats do have three players 6-3 or taller but all are freshmen and only one played more than 7 minutes—6-3 F Erika Young. Guards Woods & Romero provided the bulk of the scoring with 27 and 20 pts, respectively. That was 47 of their 63 pts. They were also the leading rebounders with 5 each. As long as Nneka stays out of foul trouble, KSU will have a hard time stopping her. Kelsey and Imani should be able to help in controlling the boards. KSU will look to overcome their height disadvantage with hustle.

KSU had 12 players play in their Big 12 season opener, 9 which had double digit minutes with Woods (36 minutes) and Romero (31 minutes) putting in the most. Horns had three with 30 or more minutes: Brady (30), Celina (30) and Empress (32). Nneka did her damage (18 pts & 9 rebs) in 23 minutes limited due to foul trouble.

Texas was a terrible 2-18 (11.1%) from BTA with Brady hitting the only treys the Horns made. KSU was only slightly better at 5-26 (19.2%) with Woods (3-6) the main threat. For the season, Leick, Texada, Brianna Craig and Kelly Thompson join Woods as KSU’s main 3pt shooters. Even with the poor showing at OSU, Texas is averaging 36.6% from BTA. Gigi tops the team in 3pt accuracy at 63.6% , hitting 7 of 11. Brady is second at Brady at 45.7% (16-35). Chassidy, likely out for this game as she recovers from a knee injury, has made the most (18) and taken the most (49) treys.

Kelsey should get more than 3 shots—she made 2. She can’t do much better than her 12 rebs vs OSU. Imani had a solid game with 12 pts and 7 rebs. Brady’s 10 pts led the backcourt scoring against OSU.

Injuries: KSU: Stacey Malone, 6-1 RS Fr. F is out for the year with a knee injury & Chantay Caron, 5-11 Sr. G/F, did not play the last game due to illness. Texas: Chassidy: missed the last game due to an knee injury (day to day).

Should be a good game, and more importantly, Horns have an outstanding opportunity to win their Big 12 home opener.

Outstanding first half. Great penetration to the basket. Extremely sloppy second half. However, the game was never really close.

The refs were whistle happy today -- too many fouls. It really changes the entire game and stops momentum.

Defense was outstanding. At one point KSU was 1-16 from the field.

I'm not sure we made a three pointer and only attempted a few. Of course, we were pounding it inside so well there was really no need. Good game. Beat OU!

Seattle, I don't want to pick a fight with you but here's the real "in your face" stat: We beat KState at home last year and then lost to them on the road.

We lost to OKS on the road last year by 6. We lost to OKS on the road this year by 6. We beat KState at home last year by 19 and beat them today by 14. With the exception of a great win a few weeks ago against Aggy, we still have very little to be excited about yet. We seem to have a good recruiter but the jury is still out on her coaching skills. I watch with anticipation in hopes we really have turned a corner.

Nancy Mulkey and Lauren Cox were in attendance today. Seems there were some others recruits as well. Hook em!

Horns came out strong on defense and continued in that vein for the game. Without FTs, Kansas would have had trouble staying close. They made 19 of 26 . Otherwise, the Horns held them to 27.5% from the field and 22.2 % from BTA (6-27).

Horns had a bit more difficulty hitting shots in the second half after making 62.5%. They plummeted to a mere 59.1% in the second half, leaving them at 60.9% for the game. They really did struggle from BTA, hitting only 1-4 for the game. FT shooting was also not good this game, as they only hit 10-20.

In an area I had thought they would dominate, rebounding, KSU tied Texas with 34 boards. Horns did make difficult for KSU to finish inside as they blocked 10 shots. Kelsey led the way with 4, Nneka had 3 and Imani 2. Horns had 50 pts in the paint to 14 for KSU. 15 assists on 28 made FGs seems to be a good ratio to me. Several of the 21 TOs happened due to an unexpected or extremely difficult pass not being handled.

Loved the suffocating defense and the emphatic blocks. Several times, a KSU guard would get into the paint and the help defense from the posts would result in a blocked shot. Really nice passing for the most part. As expected, our posts led the way in scoring with Nneka’s 18 pts and Imani’s 10. Kelsey had 7 pts and Nekia 5 as our post players totaled 40 of the team’s 67 pts. Imani’s 62.5% shooting was the lowest of the four. That’s a percentage the team can live with, with most of those shots being close range. Imani was the leading rebounder with 6. Nneka’s 34 minutes and Brady’s 33 led the team with Celina’s 27 and Krystle’s 25 making those four the only ones to play at least 20 minutes. Horns ended up with 3 players with four fouls although no one fouled out. Horns had 25 fouls leading to 27 KSU FT attempts. Foul trouble plagued our guards as three had four fouls and one three.

Recruiting: Saw several recruits come in and noticed several others all sitting behind the team’s bench. Two I am pretty sure I recognized: Ashley Hearn (2015 F) and Nancy Mulkey (2016 C). Rumored to also be there: Lauren Cox (2016 F) and Brooke Alexander (2015 SG/SF) among others. They had to like what they saw on defense and how fluidly the offense ran. While the posts scored about 2/3s of the points, shots attempted were about even with posts taking 25 and guards/wings 21. Another thing probably enjoyed was the way the Horns were able to get out on the fast break often, including the posts finishing several breaks with easy layups.

Horns jumped out to a double digit lead early and never trailed in the game. Still, some things they need to work on. TOs reached 21 for the game. Rebounding has to improve. Horns are not dominating in rebounding. FT shooting was very poor. Still, it was an important win and no game is perfect.

OU will be coming in Wednesday after dropping an OT game to ISU today. They will be looking to steal a road win to make up for losing at home. Game time is 11 AM as various elementary schools will send their students for a day on campus.

Is the game really at 11AM? I assumed it was a typo in the schedule? OU is such a big game, it seems odd to remove the crowd factor and replace it with school kids.

True. But experience tells me they will be yelling for free t-shirts and the Rudy's blimp and not necessarily the home team. Just seems to be an odd game to schedule this way. My group of six season ticket holders won't be able to make it and I'm sure I am not alone in that category. Against KState I could see but OU? I think that is a huge miss especially if it ends up being a close game. No pressure on the refs and no crowd support at key moments when the team needs a lift. IMHO

WCBB, aren't we a bit pessimistic? A crowd 3x the normal size is welcomed, even if it takes freebies to reign people in. Oh...let's evaluate a season's "body of work" before saying anything about progress. It's all about how the team finishes. :^)

WCBB, the scheduling of the trip is a bit strange but the noise the kids create is simply awesome. This is likely to be our biggest and noisiest crowd this season.

Since UT started this, the kids have been really good about following the cheerleaders lead on when and what to yell. There really is not sufficient vocal support during the regular games to say that the team will miss it. In fact, they have trouble hearing instructions from the bench during this game, not something that has been a problem the last few years.

While they may be the noisiest when yelling for freebies, they will bring plenty of noise when prompted to do so. The time is inconvenient for a number of fans but this game is a way to help grow support among the younger set.

Personally, it gives me a chance to take a day off work. Works for me.

Have to agree with WCBBNUT. Give the kids a non-conference game, not a super important conference game. The average age of UT women's basketball games is already around 70 and half those people are asleep. An 11 a.m. weekday start guarantees just about anyone who might consider getting off their butts and cheering won't be able to make it (unless they're 8 years old). I'm also not wild about an early start for the team. I can't make it (and I swear I'm not bitter - smile) but I'll be following it closely online. Hook 'em.

Great news to have so many recruits in attendance on Sunday afternoon. Thought I saw Mulkey sitting behind Fran Harris and Nell Fortner.

Glad we are still pursuing Adut Bulgak.

Ashley Hearn is class of 2015, btw:

I take it that Sarah Hattis has decided not to play basketball any longer?

Don't worry texexted, I'll be there screaming like a little school girl loud enough for both of us.
