Big 12 3-1 After First Day

The Horn Identity

Except for the Bears, the Big 12 had a good first day.

It was a nice story for Baylor to make the tourney, but they were really falling apart at the end of the season. And, Purdue really wasn't a good match up.

Other than that, KU rolled like a #1 seed should. KSU pulled off a nice upset of USC. And, the Ags won a tight game that you would expect of a 8-9 match up.

I'm confident that the Horns will do what it takes to win. Who knows what the Sooners will do? But, I wouldn't mind seeing the Big 12 go 5-1 in the first round.

I will certainly root for the Horns!

Big East had the best day, going 4-0. Big 10 went 3-0 (don't worry, they'll tank soon). SEC took it on the chin, 0-2 on the day.

Outstanding synopsis and thread.

Were we underestimated by the committee? We were underdogs in 3 of our games (based on seed) and we won 2 of them.

Does this mean that the Big XII was undervalued.

Sure the Big East went 4-0 and the Big 10 3-0... but they were favored.

Can you REALLY claim aggy was underseeded and pulled an upset? How much difference is there supposed to be between an 8 and a 9 anyway?

With that said, KSU played a very good game against a good USC team that couldn't use Taj Gray the way they have been thanks to foul trouble. And good on Beasley and crew for creating that. Now, can they do it again against a real good Wisconsin team?

I correctly picked all the Big XII games in my brackets. It was tough rooting for aggy knowing that they would beat their chests over "upsetting" a buch of pasty white guys.

Be nice to have the NIT and NCAA Champs from the Big 12.

I think NU will contend for the NIT title, and Texas should be a real strong contender for the big prize if they can make it out of that third-world country known as Arkansas....

And the SEC is sucking it, big time. Vandy down 12 at the half, MSU down 10 at the half, Tennessee in a fight until about 3 minutes to go against a 15 seed.

I'm all for the Big 12, but admittedly, having to pick between OU and a team from Philadelphia is not something that's privy to me. It's like having to pick between OU and Miami.

Wish there was a way both could lose....

5-1 it is. I'll take it - even if I had to pull for OU to get it done.

As much as we all like to pull for Baylor, I think we'd admit that they really didn't deserve to make it - down the stretch.

I think it bodes well for Texas and KU, even KSU and OU. It would be great if we could put 4 in the Sweet Sixteen.

I gotta' believe tomorrow is the end of the road for both aggy (duh!) and KSU. Wisconsin is a damned good team and I believe they'll handle Beasley and friends.

I think KSU can take Wisconsin. They'll have to push the tempo and get more than Beasley and Walker involved, but I don't think that's out of the question. Wisconsin is tough, but they're not all that athletic.

Why is it that when it's football season and most of the SEC is asspounding opponents in top tier and BCS bowls, while Big XII champ OU is defeated on big stages to the likes of mid-majors and WVU, everyone on this board is like "conference allegiances are stupid, I'd never pull for OU/aggy, blah, blah, blah" but when the B12 produces favorable results in something, you're all friends and pulling for one another?

Vol, for me it is easy to take credit when they win for big 12 reasons and not care or laugh, at aggy for instance, when they lose.

So, OU winning was good for the conference even though I wasn't really worried about them winning. An aside is I do like the way their super frosh plays.

I have a much easier time pulling for the B12 in basketball & baseball moreso than in football for some reason.

I think it is easier to pull for other Big 12 basketball teams for several reasons:

1. We are first and foremost a football conference. So, bragging rights go to the conference team that does best. So, it's harder to rout for your opponents.

2. We, as a conference, are still fighting for respect in basketball against the East Coast mentality. So, every win helps to prove a point.

3. The beauty of March madness is that several conference teams have an independent path to the championship, so it is easier to rout for another conference team without it interfering with your own path to the Final Four.

All that said, I have to honestly say that my limitation on routing for conference opponents goes only so far. That is, I'm selfish enough to not want to see any of them do better than us. As long as we're winning I'm OK with them winning.

I, for one, am consistent.

I could care less about fellow conference program success in football. I want Texas to win. Period.

Unlike those in the SEC, most Texas fans support our team before our conference, and don't ask to have it both ways.

I guess this means during football season next year, there won't be any posts from SEC lurkers talking conference over individual team accomplishments?

Basketball is just different, I think, since we don't get much respect as a conference. Aggy getting embarrassed by Tennessee in the cotton bowl after thumping their chests over the bowl bid so much made me laugh so hard I almost burst something. If aggy were to miraculously manage to beat UCLA, I'd be happy for them (and glad texas has an easier road to the championship).

i think there is a difference between talking on a message board about how well your team's conference is doing, like in this thread, and starting chants of your conference name and running to message boards all over the place trying to boast about how dominant your conference is, like the SEC does during football season (and i'm sure they would for any other sport if they felt they had the ammunition)

i didn't hear a "big 12" chant at any big 12 games. i doubt you'll see one of us on an SEC team board bragging on our conference and demeaning the others (well i wouldn't put it past aggy, but they're aggy)
