Smurfette and I are considering joining the leagues of Austinites that bike to moderately close locations. We both agreed that we drive to too many places. However, neither of us have owned a bike since college and I'd be clueless as to which bike to buy or where to begin to look for one. I do not want to spend much and am not opposed to buying a used bike. All suggestions welcome. Thanks.

I purchased a Giant Cypress ST in March for my 5 mile each way daily commute to work. It is ideal for the price ($219). It comes with a couple free tune-ups, I got it at University Cyclery @ 29th & Lamar. It was cheaper than fixing up my old road bike, but I'm sure it has sub-par components and I'll probably need to replace the bike in a couple years.

I've always been a Trek guy, I like the folks from Waterloo WI. they make a great bike, from the high end to the entry level. you propbaby want/need a Hybrid. they are good for commutes and packed track riding (think Lake Austin Hike and Bike trail), it's basically a mountain bike stylr frame with smaller tire and an upright riding feel.
the Trek site explains their various bike and their intended use. did I also mention they are having a big sale this month? "yellow tag" sale to coincide w/ Lance and le Tour. The Link

Ditto on Trek. I sold them back when I worked at Richardson Bike Mart in high school, and they are damn durable bikes (many of which have great warranties as well). Something like this would probably be what you're looking for:
