not sure if this belongs in here but since we are talking about food...what are you favorite whole bean coffees?

I just got a grind and brew coffee maker so im finally buying whole beans to make my coffee.

I LOVE coffee and usually go towards a stronger blend rather than some of the lighter stuff. Dark French roast...etc...I love

what are some of your favorite choices that may be available locally?

I've been buying my beans from Java Coffee & Tea Company for 20 years or so.

They're thankfully close to me, but they'll ship any order over 2 lbs for $2.20. Still a great deal. Every 11th lb is free.

Tell 'em Doobie sent you.

(It'll be funny.)

Kona Peaberry

$24/lb or so.

Have it shipped from Hawaii. You won't regret it.

ANother vote for Central Market. They have an awesome whole bean coffee selection. Im partial to the Kenya AA myself.

I am partial to French Roast these days. Kinda boring, I suppose, but so be it.

In what city do you live? If you are in Austin, Anderson's Coffee (on Kirby Lane) has a great selection.

Mexican Shade Grown from Starbucks (seasonal). This is my personal favorite coffee for under 12 bucks per pound.

Buy green beans and roast them in the oven. It's a step beyond buying whole beans. Green beans are easy to find. For example, Triannon (Bee Caves Rd. and Walsh Tarlton) has a large selection of green coffee beans.

Yeah, Ruta Maya Organic beans (medium or dark) for something like $5.50/pound are very hard to pass up. I also like CostCo's "house" French Roast, which comes in at about $3/lb.

there is a Ruta Maya in San Antonio and strangely enough havent tried it. need to go do that

Another vote for Ruta Maya. Get the big bag at Costco. Also, got the $20 100% Kona they have at Costco right now, and it's very good stuff. On the cheap, I like the HEB French Roast.

Starbuck's Sumatra. Anyone have recommendations on beans that are similar in flavor to Sumatra? I have a 12 cup grind and brew that I only use on the weekend. Can anyone suggest a good 2 or 4 cup coffee maker? I had coffee from a french press the other day and it was magnificent.

I could only find the medium roast Ruta Maya at central market and I have to say I wasnt impressed

I need to go down to their shop on the riverwalk and try their dark roast I guess

i have been getting into coffee. have a krups coffee maker.

how many tablespoons do you use per cup of water. i was going 1:1 and someone told me that they did 2 cups per 1 tablespoon. surprised me. that sounds too watered down. coffee makers can't be that much different.

I've had a French Press for over a year and I love it. I usually buy whole beans of the darkest roast I can find and grind them coarse. It works great and is really easy to clean.

The fun part of cooking is experimenting.

But for starters, grind the beans just coarse enough so it doesn't filter through the metal gauze of the french press. My press holds about 20oz of water, and I use 5 heaping teaspoons - enough for 2 good cups of coffee and 1/2 a cup of mud.

What these guys said. A little courser is better. And a while back on here I learned that you should clean the filter contraption with soap and water every time (not just water). When you see all the oils and gunk left on after a brew you'll see why.

I haven't tried any Costco beans, but they sound good. I've had good experience with Starbucks beans from the store (or your local SB). It tastes better at home when it's not burnt like they do at Starbucks.

there's an interesting coffee at The Mesquite Roasted Company

they're out of Big Lake, Texas, and sell Guatemalan Antigua whole bean which has been roasted over mesquite coals (lots of that in West Texas) just like the ranches used to do in the old days. has a good, dark, very different flavor.

I like it. at 7.95 for 1/2 lb, it's worth a taste.

Anyone know where I can buy GOOD Columbian on-line?

I have friends' parents who lived and/or did business in south America and would bring me coffee. The stuff was light years ahead of anything I've gotten here in the US.
