Best way to exchange currency? (Fiji Australia)

I'll be heading to Fiji and Australia in a couple of months, and I'm curious what you guys think is the best way to exchange currency when abroud?

In the past, I've gone mostly to banks once in the country, and either took money from the ATM or exchanged cash inside.

In most countries is there is a significant difference in the exchange rates at banks versus exchange counters at airports and hotels? I've always assumed the answer is 'yes', but just curious based on others' experiences.

You have it right on the buy side. The real issue is on the sell side - sell at the airport or sell upon return. That is a real crap shot. I always check the rates locally with the rates in the States before I head to the airport. Not sure that does any good as there are a lot of variables (including time of day and greed). Best to try to not have much left over.

Also, when traveling between countries, change one currency to another without first converting back to USD.

I am of the opinion to do what is most convenient and not worry too much about it. You have already spent a ton of money just to get to those places, why worry yourself too much with the small differences that may occur in exchange rates or fees? Enjoy your time.

I will note: I got caught off guard at the airport in Nadi, Fiji departing. There is a departure fee required that needs to be in Fijian cash. Or at least there was 6 years ago. I was scrambling to exchange some dollars, get back in line and make my flight on time.

Fiji was nice. The airport, not so much. A zoo.
