Best times to fly week after Christmas?

I got invited to a New Years party in San Diego and I am trying to figure out the best days to fly for the cheapest flights. I am in Dallas. The cheapest I can find is AA for around 500 (Southwest is over 600, even flying out of Austin). Any tips?

San Diego is likely never going to be cheap. Every time I've looked at flying out there during the holidays, it's crazy.

Are you willing to fly into Orange County (or, God forbid, LAX) and drive down? Might get cheaper rates that way. Just a thought.

My buddy suggested flying into Orange and then taking the train down... I'd like to avoid LAX if possible after the mess we had there going to the Rose Bowl in 2006, but if I have to I will do it.

Use Farecast. It's an awesome travel planning tool. In the lower right corner is a box "Graph Fares over 30 days". In that box, select DFW and SAN. You'll get a graph showing the fares available by departure date. You can adjust trip length on the left side. Or, select the "Grid - Length of Travel" tab to see the fares by departure date and trip length. This site has saved me more time and money than any other site on the web.

Not sure what your trip length flexibility is, but looks like you can do quite a bit better than $500.
