Best steak in town?

A group of us will be invading Austin in September for the Ohio State game, and will be wanting to experience a real Texas steak. Where's the best place to go?

Looking forward to meeting lots of Horns fans....

. . . but that having been said, I'm partial to the steaks at Fleming's. Most people would say that Austin doesn't have a "top tier" steakhouse.

Welcome buckeyegal. Thank you, we're happy we beat them too.

Unfortunately, we don't have a plethora of local steak houses. DO NOT go to Texas Land & Cattle (chain).

Here's a thread on Austin Land & Cattle. It's my personal favorite. Great appetizers too.

Here's another discussion on steakhouses. Hope that helps.

I like Fleming's too. I would rate the chains on this order: Ruth's Chris, Fleming's, Sullivan's.

Fleming's is the best at this point.

That said, I hear they are opening a III Forks in the 2nd Street District this year. If it is open by September, I would suggest you go there..

screw steak...browse around on this board and hit some of the tex-mex places listed....just a suggestion

you will be impressed

Yes, III Forks is overrated, but I think that is relative, especially in a town like Dallas with a ton of great steak houses.

In Austin, on the other hand, III Forks is likely to be our best bet.

Thanks for the tips. I'd love to do barbecue or Tex-Mex, but I'm afraid I'm getting too old for it...damn that acid reflux problem...

Well, maybe I can get my doc to give me something for the pain and eat what I want anyway!

LOL! Thanks for your concern; it's heartwarming.

Actually, I'm at the age where I'm mostly there for the experience. Hubby and I have always wanted to visit Texas, and this was a good excuse to do so. The only time we've spent there was in the Dallas airport hotel after getting stranded overnight. I know you probably won't believe this, but I'm more interested in experiencing your town than I am in the game, which, after all, is just a game. It'll be fun, win or lose!

you know - in Austin there are some amazing places to eat that you should try while you are here. I say this because I'm sure that at some point you'll be in a city with a nicer steakhouse than Flemmings or Ruths Chris, but other restaurants in this city are really special.

Jeffry's, for example, will have steaks, but their other dishes are fantastic as well. Instead of just getting a steak off of the grill, maybe they will have one with a red wine reduction or something to that effect.

Uchi is our own special sushi restaurant. I have friends from NY and California who tell me that when they order what I tell them to, Uchi is their favorite sushi in the country. The chef there has won multiple awards on a national level for his creativity and having eaten at sushi places in 20-30 places around the world, I can tell you that he deserves every one of those awards.

Having said that, if you really want a steak, go to flemmings.

oh - and our BBQ won't affect your acid reflux. Its not like that Memphis garbage. You'll be pretty busy while you're here, but if nothing else, stop by a rudy's and get the extra moist brisket. You'll thank me later.

Flemings steaks are as good, if not a little better than Ruth's Chris.

That said, atmosphere, sides, appetizrs, deserts,e tc are better at Fleming's, IMO>

However, if you want the "Texan" feel to your experience, Austin Land & Cattle will be what you're looking for.

Also, Roaring Fork has 1/2 price bottles of wine on Sundays. This includes their "reserve" wines.

I second what Crayon said about Uchi. Try it if you like sushi/Japanese food.

I can't remember what I ordered at Uchi, but most of it was "non-traditional" and it was absolutely incredible. Also, I will second Jeffrey's for high-end (one of the best meals I've had) and Roaring Fork for great food, borad selection (didn't know about the 50% off wine on Sundays, but that is nice).

Ruth Chris's sucks

ALC and Flemings are better than most.

Eddie V's filet is the best steak in town and the twice baked potatoes are awesome. It is a seafood/steak place on 5th and San Jacinto downtown.

Def. hit up the bar-b-que and tex-mex, if the acid reflux get to you check out these threads.

Just got back from uchi:

- maguro sashimi w/ goat cheese
- avo bake
- hotate whatever (scallop w/ pumpkin puree)
- hamachi cure (smoked hamachi sashimi w/ white soy sauce)
- crunchy tuna roll
- mustang roll (??? - don't remember what's in it)
- dessert: cafe du monde gelato w/ dulce de leche & artisinal chocolate PLUS a glass of port

Ridiculously good.

It is as good as Nobu.

So many great options...I'm getting hungry!!

When I look around Columbus and I see the crappy chain steakhouses that all have some variation of Texas in their name (three offhand I can think of are Lone Star, Texas Roadhouse, and Longhorn), I wonder if any real Texans have ever eaten there and what they thought of their states' identity being co-opted like that. I suspect that the road kill steak I got at Lone Star last Saturday isn't representative of real Texas cuisine!

Thanks for all the info, and we'll see you in September!
